Indian appointed US engineering college dean

A US university has appointed an Indian as the dean of its engineering college. C Mauli Agrawal was made the Dean of the College of Engineering by the University of Texas at San Antonio.

A graduate of Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur, Agrawal holds the Peter Flawn Endowed Professorship in biomedical engineering at UTSA and is a Professor of Orthopedics at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

"Mauli Agrawal is an accomplished scholar, teacher and leader. He will continue to build on UTSA's exceptional engineering program while expanding partnerships that benefit his colleagues, students and UTSA," said the University President Ricardo Romo.

Agrawal has authored more than 240 scientific publications and has been awarded 11 patents with seven more pending.

He's a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, President of the Society for Biomaterials, and the technology developed in his laboratories has be en licensed by companies in San Antonio.

In 1997, Agrawal and three other individuals, co-founded Xilas Medical, Inc. The company was the first in Texas to receive a $1 million grant from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund to develop medical products that will assist diabetics with disease-related foot problems.

"I am honored to be selected for this position as UTSA and San Antonio are poised to do great things," said Agrawal.
