Trai for duty cut on mobiles

December 18, 2003 18:27 IST

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has suggested reduction of customs duty on mobile phones to five per cent from 10 per cent along with the abolition of Special Additional Duty, Minister of State for IT and Communications Ashok Pradhan told Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

As part of the annual budget exercise, such suggestions are considered by the government, based on various factors like availability of indigenous manufacturing, growth and affordability of telecom services and revenue implications, he said.

To another query, Pradhan said government had not approved any hike in foreign direct investment in basic and cellular services to 74 per cent from the existing 49 per cent.
