Hit by the growing non-tariff barriers imposed by the European Union, India is likely to raise the issue at the day-long India-EU summit at The Hague on Monday.

Indian exports faced a large number of non-tariff barriers in the form of certain rules and regulations, which were very arbitrary and not based on technical soundness, official sources said.

The government had, in fact, raised the issue of export of gherkins at the India-EU joint commission meeting in Delhi last month.

Various restrictions have been put on gherkins exported from India like size and quantity apart from product categorization, which was changed arbitrarily. Other exports from India like that of basmati also face similar restrictions.

Apart from the proposal to upgrade Indo-EU relationship into a strategic partnership, WTO issues in the context of pushing ahead the Doha Development Agenda will come up at the summit to be attended by prime minister Manmohan Singh and commerce and industry minister Kamal Nath.
