UK retail chain Poundland to sell Today's pens

June 03, 2004 09:19 IST

The Mumbai-based Today's Writing Products Ltd has become the first Indian pen manufacturer to get its brand of pens to be sold through Poundland, Europe's leading single price retailer.

For the first time, Poundland has allowed a pen manufacturer to retain its logo on a specially designed packaging.

"This is an important breakthrough for us," said Rajesh Drolia, chairman and managing director of Today's Writing Products Ltd. "It is the first time that Poundland has chosen an established Indian pen manufacturer as suppliers. It is clearly indicative of the current trend of international buyers switching to Indian products. The fact that Today's has been chosen is a tribute to our product innovation and quality," he added.

Poundland is Europe's fastest growing retail chain. With over 100 stores and over a million walk-in customers a day, Poundland represents a significant market for Today's.

At present, Today's will supply pens worth $210,000

to Poundland. The company expects it to grow to $1 million in the next one year.

That a major retail chain like Poundland visited India to source pens is a big boost for Indian writing instrument manufacturers. In fact, in the past six months, several companies have been looking to India as an alternative source to China.

Today's has increased its manufacturing capacity to cater to the increased exports.

Already the company exports to many countries in the America, Europe, Asia and Africa. In fact, one of Today's brand is largest selling pen in the Philippines. The company expects its exports to touch the $4 million next year.

To tap new markets, the company has decided to enter into alliance with leading global brands. Already Today's has a tie up with MonAmi, the Korean No 1 writing instruments and stationery company.
