Textile exports at Rs 13,352 cr in Apr-May

Textile exports from India grew 17.9 per cent in the first two months of this fiscal to touch Rs 13,352 crore (Rs 133.52 billion), according to an official.

"The exports in April grew to Rs 6,867 crore (Rs 68.67 billion) from Rs 5,673 crore (Rs 56.73 billion) in the same month of the previous fiscal.

In May, the exports stood at Rs 6485 crore (Rs 64.85 billion) as against Rs 5651 crore (Rs 56.51 billlion) in the May 2005," Quaiser Shamim, joint secretary in Ministry of Textiles said after inaugurating 37th India International Garment Fair. The growth in April was 21.04 per cent while in May it was Rs 14.24 crore (Rs 142.4 million), he said quoting the raw figures provided by DGCIS.

According to quick estimates, the exports of garments in June grew 13.3 per cent year-on-year to Rs 3,313 crore (Rs 33.13 billion).

He said the outlook for exports of garments from India looks good. "Of the total textile exports of $17 billion in 2005-06, garments accounted for $8.2 billion.

This year we have set a target of $9.5 billion," Shamim added. He said as many as 395 exporters are participating in the garment fair as against 350 that put up their stalls in the previous edition of the fair.

The fair is held twice a year and in this edition the organisers are expecting a business of $125 million, Vijay Aggawal, chairman of Apparel Export Promotion Council said.

More than 500 buyers from 62 countries have registered for the fair. Apart from traditional importers, buyers from mexico, Hungary, Brazil, Israel, Chile and Panama are expected at the fair.
