Govt may allow spectrum sharing

A mobile phoneThe government mulls allowing telecom operators to share frequency to avoid congestion owing to an acute shortage of spectrum.

The move would allow mobile operators with relatively less number of subscribers to share spectrum with other players.

"Yes. The department of telecommunication is looking at the proposal to allow sharing of spectrum," telecom secretary Siddartha Behura told reporters on the sidelines of a function.

He added that the sharing of spectrum is one of the recommendations of the high powered committee. "We have referred the matter to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

"They will give us a comprehensive report," Behura added.
