Information technology solutions and services major Tata Consultancy Services is to open an 'automotive centre of excellence' in Detroit, North America, which is expected to be "fully functional", within the next two months.

The Indian software major is also planning to recruit 50 local automotive professionals in the next 12-18 months for the centre, which is "a key development in the expansion of the firm's global delivery model," TCS sources said in Mumbai on Thursday.

The centre is an extension of TCS' current presence in Detroit, where the IT major has set up a development centre, they said, adding the existing development centre would also be scaled up in the coming years.

TCS would offer new product introduction, process engineering, industrial automation, enterprise asset management, industrial embedded systems and supply chain optimisation from the new centre, they added.

Detroit houses some of the major automotive original equipment manufacturers including Ford, General Motors and DaimlerChrysler and leading tier-one suppliers like Johnson Controls and Eaton, and opening a centre would help in providing faster service to these clients, they added.

The Tata-group company offers a range of integrated engineering and industrial services to manufacturers in the auto industry.
