The headquarters of the South Eastern Railway, Calcutta Improvement Trust and Calcutta Telephones in the metropolis have been identified by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation as among the 500 defaulting property tax payers over the past four to five years, totalling nearly Rs 200 crore (Rs 2 billion).

KMC sources said on Thursday that the civic personnel had already disconnected water lines in the Calcutta Improvement Trust building, CIT headquarters, for not paying property tax to the KMC despite reminders.

"The water lines in many other defaulting buildings, including a large commercial house on Park street, will also be disconnected for failing to pay taxes in time," the sources said.

KMC, in its renewed drive to realise unpaid property tax from defaulters, has started pasting notices on defaulting buildings with a reminder to pay up as early as possible or face 'stern action', including water line disconnection.

Mayor Subrata Mukherjee has said that the KMC was determined to realise arrear tax from the defaulters.

The mayor also held a meeting with the municipal affairs minister Ashok Bhattacharyaya on trade licence fees hiked by the West Bengal government recently.

To a question, the mayor said that legal steps might follow if property tax arrears were not paid by the defaulters.
