The land acquisition process by the West Bengal government for the Tata Motors plant in West Bengal's Singur suffered another setback on Tuesday with farmers preventing a hearing by the administration on those who did not wish to give up their land.
Thousands of farmers squatted near the block development office where armed police and the RAF were posted, shouting they would not part with their land inspite of 'pressure' by the Left Front government.
The block development officer was to hold a hearing of 1010 farmers who had stated that they were unwilling to give up their land.
BDO Abhijit Mukherjee, who waited for hours to hear the farmers, later told reporters that the administration might take penal action against those who did not attend the day's meeting.
