Tata Motors Limited will set up a plant for its ambitious Rs 100,000-car project in West Bengal, chief minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya said on Friday.
Bhattacharya, who had a meeting with Tata Motors managing director Ravi Kant in the morning, said the company has finally selected West Bengal for setting up the plant which would manufacture the Rs 100,000-car.
He said the state government had been in talks with Tata Motors for the project for the last two months. The government had several rounds of discussions on this during the period, he said.
The chief minister said the company was yet to select the exact site in the state.
Industry minister Nirupam Sen, who was also present at the meeting, said Tata Motors officials had earlier visited a site in Kharagpur. The officials would further visit sites at Singur near Dankuni, Sankrail and Uluberia, he said.
Sen said the company would take a decision on the site within 10 to 15 days.
Sen said that the company had also sought fiscal incentives from the government.
Meanwhile, Ratan Tata has expressed desire to meet the chief minister. Sen said Tata was likely to call on the chief minister either on May 17 or 18.
Tata Motors managing director said the company has been scouting for a place for locating the project. Besides West Bengal, Tata Motors has been in talks with the Uttaranchal government.
West Bengal would be third state in the country to have a manufacturing facility of Tata Motors. The company has manufacturing units at Pune in Maharashtra and Jamshedpur in Jharkhand.
