Bank, insurance strike on Feb 24 for wage hike

The staff and officers of banks and insurance companies are expected to go on a day long strike following a call by major central trade unions on Tuesday (February 24) demanding a wage revision.

Of the 10 banking unions, six of them will take part in the strike over demands which include early revision of wages and one more pension option for the bankers.

Of the five unions in the insurance sector, three of them will join, Co-ordinator of All India Coordination Committee of Unions in Finance Sector, Shantha Raju said on Monday.

Over 1.5 million workmen and officers working in the sector, including RBI and its associates, UTI and other institutions like cooperatives and rural banks will strike work on Tuesday, he claimed.

"We waited for over seven months for the government to come out with measures to seek review of Supreme Court order on Right to Strike," Raju said here, adding that "the strike will be total as far as financial sector is concerned."

In a release, National Organistion of Bank Officers, National Organisation of Bank Workers, All India Gramin Bank Workers and Officers Organisations, All India Reserve Bank Workers Organisation and All India Cooperative Bank Workers Organisation said they will not take part in the strike.

Already Sangh Parivar-backed BMS and Congress-supported INTUC are not participating in the strike, which according to them was politically motivated.

Maharashtra trade unions to go on strike

Around 3 million workers in Maharashtra would join the day-long nation-wide strike called by several central trade unions to protest against the decision of the Supreme Court banning the right to strike.

The workers would stage demonstrations at various parts of the state and would hold gate meetings in front of factories as part of the agitation, A D Golandaz, deputy convener, Trade Unions Joint Action Committee, the umbrella body under which the strike would be staged in the state, said.

I-Tax employees to go on strike

About 4,500 non-gazetted employees of Income-tax department in Gujarat to go on a day's strike on February 24, as a part of nation-wide call given by the Confederation of central Government Employees and workers demanding implementation of 11 points charter of demands including the right to strike.

Various employees organisations in the banking sector, insurance sector, state and other central government departments are also to participate in the strike, says an Income tax Employees' Federation Gujarat circle release.

UT powermen to go on strike

The U T Powermen Union has given a call of strike for on February 24 due to 'non acceptance' of some of their demands.

An official release said that the Chandigarh administration has always been sympathetic to the genuine demands of the Employees and there is no cause for any strike by them.
