Steelmakers seek waiver of US quota

December 31, 2002 13:57 IST

The cold-rolled steel producers have urged the US government to grant total exemption to exports of galvanised sheets.

The steel producers said there was no question of injuring the US industry since it did not produce any galvanised products.

"We have furnished data to the US government and we hope a decision on this is taken soon," Dilip Chenoy, deputy director-general, the Confederation of Indian Industry, Business Standard.

A final decision on the issue will be taken in a few months. The export of galvanised products is likely to touch 700,000 tonnes by the end of 2002-03.

As per estimates, only about 200,000 tonnes will be exported to the US during the same period.

India exported about 600,000 tonnes of galvanised sheets during 2001-02, S C Mathur, executive director, the Cold Rolled Manufacturers Association, said.
