May 24, 2005 18:30 IST

Union Minister for Civil Aviation Praful Patel flagged off SpiceJet, India's latest low cost, no-frills airline, on Tuesday on the Delhi-Ahmedabad-Mumbai route with a Boeing 737-800 aircraft in an efficient all economy 189 seat configuration.

The fares on SpiceJet for this sector range between Rs 1,699 and Rs 4,899. On the very first day of opening its reservations, SpiceJet received an overwhelming market response and sold 37,348 tickets in a day, which is the largest number of tickets ever sold by any airline in Asia on the first day of their booking, claimed a company press release.

Dedicating SpiceJet services to the nation, Mark Winders, CEO SpiceJet Limited, said, "India is at the threshold of a dynamic phase of development. The only impediment to growth now, is the infrastructure. SpiceJet will ensure that India gets a move on. It is only fair that the benefits of liberalization now reach the masses."

SpiceJet is positioned as a low-fare, no-frills airline that aims to make air travel accessible to everyone. SpiceJet is not just about low fares, with new generation Boeing 737-800 aircrafts, cutting edge technology and professional management, but the airline promises to deliver comfortable and consistent on-time performance as well.
