Singur plant: VP Singh hints at breakthrough

December 15, 2006 14:03 IST

Hinting at a breakthrough in the Tatamotors land acquisition deal, former Prime minister V P Singh said he had a positive discussion on the issue with West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya on Friday.

Singh, who flew in to Kolkata on Friday morning to attempt breaking the deadlock, drove straight to the West Bengal secretariat and held an hour long discussion with the chief minister.

"Talks have been positive and cordial. We not only discussed Singur issue but also the larger perspective with regard to policy matters in the whole country," Singh told reporters after the meeting. He said he would meet Trinamul Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee and CPI-M veteran Jyoti Basu.

Banerjee has been on fast for the last 12 days on a makeshift dias in the Esplanade area in the heart of Kolkata in protest against acquistion of farmland for the Tatamotors project at Singur, 35 km from Kolkata.

The state government has already acquired 997 acres of land at Singur in Hooghly district and is in the process of handing over the same to Tatamotors for setting up their plant to manufacture the Rs 100,000 small car.

Mamata has been objecting to the acquistion of multi-crop agricultural land for the project and demanding its relocation to any non-agricultural land.
