Bengal bans political meetings in Singur

November 30, 2006 14:00 IST

West Bengal Government on Thursday barred political parties from holding any meeting or procession at Singur, site of the proposed small car project of Tata Motors, although a defiant Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said she would undertake a scheduled march in Singur.

The Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said the administration had barred all political parties from holding any meeting or procession at Singur.

Banerjee told PTI she would leave for Singur around noon to undertake a march as scheduled earlier.

"How could they stop us from going there? We are the main opposition. Has the state government clamped emergency?", she said.

"I heard they had deployed much police force near Dankuni, but I am going there. Leaders of other political parties, including the Congress and SUCI, will also go there", she added.

Banerjee claimed the police had earlier gave permission to them to hold meeting. But suddenly they issued orders that "we can not hold meeting".

On Wednesday, the Left Front organised a meeting at Singur, she informed.
