Reliance Industries has said the outcome of the Maharashtra government referendum on Mukesh Ambani-promoted Raigad special economic zone cannot be seen going against the SEZ since the ballot was cast by 'so-called farmers' and not the genuine landowners.

"I do not agree that the results have gone against the Reliance Industries. The administration had declared initially that they will go for the ballot paper voting. But some people have created signed ballot paper through so-called farmers," Reliance Industries global president, corporate affairs, Parimal Nathwani, said in an NDTV panel discussion.

Some 'vested interests' harm the development of the region and the country by always 'blackmailing', Parimal said. He, however,  did not name these people.

He said the group would not blame the state government but the 'farmers have been misled'.

About 6,000 land-owners took part in a first of its kind referendum to ascertain whether farmers want to give their land for an SEZ.

The commerce ministry has said the Centre would not grant the formal approval to the project if it is found that the land has been acquired compulsorily.

The Mumbai SEZ Ltd, as it is known, has received in-principle approval. The next stage of clearance could be given only after the promoters get land in their possession.
