Sensex crashes by 104 points at close

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 30 points at 11,969. Fresh buying in morning deals saw the index zoom past the 12,000-mark to touch a high of 12,087.

However, selling at higher levels capped the rally. Selling gained momentum in the latter half of the day, and the index tumbled into red all the way to a low of 11,803 - down 284 points from the high.

The Sensex finally closed with a loss of 104 points at 11,835.

The Nifty after hitting an all-time high of 3,599, closed at 3508, down 48 points.

The BSE IT and PSU indices plunged 2% each to 4013 and 6068, respectively. The Auto index dropped 1.4% to 5422. While the BSE Mid-cap index moved up 0.6% to 5717, the Small-cap index advanced nearly 1% to 7255.

The market breadth was positive. Out of 2,575 stocks traded, 1,403 advanced, 1,108 declined and the rest were unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERS

Reliance zoomed to a high of Rs 1,013 on the back of better-than-expected results. The stock finally closed with a gain of 2% at Rs 997.

Larsen & Toubro surged 1.6 %to Rs 2,704, and Hindalco moved up 1.4% to Rs 217.

ONGC slumped 6% to Rs 1,304. IOC today sold 1.92% (2.74 crore shares) of its stake in ONGC at Rs 1,345 per share to collect Rs 3,685 crore.

ACC dropped 3.6% to Rs 934. Tata Steel dropped 2.3% to Rs 639.

Infosys plunged almost 3 % to Rs 3,134. Bharti Tele was down 2.3% at Rs 402.

Hero Honda and Maruti tumbled nearly 3% each to Rs 823 and Rs 898, respectively. Tata Motors declined 2.2% to Rs 937.

SBI and HDFC Bank declined 1.6% each to Rs 895 and Rs 823, respectively.

OTHER GAINERS & LOSERS

RCF zoomed 19% to Rs 57.20. SKF India, Thomas Cook, Indiabulls, Todays Writing, Petronet LNG, Godawari Power, Mid-day, Raymond, BEML, Hinduja TMT, MRPL, Nestle, Colgate, Bombay Dyeing and Ashok Leyland were the other major gainers today.

Maharashtra Seamless and Harrison Malyalam plunged over 7% each to Rs 328 and Rs 136, respectively. KRBL, FACT, HEG, Aptech, Rama Newsprint, Tinplate, Madhav Marble, Arvind Mills, GE Shipping, Reliance Communication Ventures, Chennai Petro, TVS Motors, MphasiS BFL and Finolex Industries ended in the negative zones.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 381.36 crore followed by ONGC (Rs 155.80 crore), NTPC (Rs 151.26 crore), Satyam (Rs 116.55 crore) and Tata Steel (Rs 108.17 crore).

NTPC led the volume chart with trades of around 1.16 crore shares followed by RCF (1.06 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (1.06 crore), Hindustan Motors (57.30 lakh) and JP Hydro-Power (49.65 lakh).
