Sensex ends down 502pts; ICICI, Reliance weigh

Following weak cues from the global markets, the Sensex opened with a negative gap of 325 points at 14,452. The index barely managed to touch a high of 14,484, and then started slipping deeper into red.

Unabated selling in banking, realty and energy stocks saw the index drop to a low of 14,210 - down 566 points from the previous close. The Sensx finally ended with a loss of 502 points at 14,275.

The BSE Bankex plunged 5.8% to Rs 6,752, and the Oil & Gas index dropped over 5% to 9,504. The Realty index shed nearly 4% at 5,029.

The market breadth was fairly negative - out of 2,691 stocks traded, 1,450 declined, and 1,164 advanced today.

The NSE Nifty dropped 122 points at 4,312.

Index shakers...

ICICI Bank slumped 9.6% to Rs 657. HDFC Bank plunged over 9% to Rs 1,127, and HDFC shed 5.7% at Rs 2,222. SBI was down 2% at Rs 1,449.

Reliance tumbled nearly 7% to Rs 2,147. ONGC slipped 4.3% to Rs 983.

Jaiprakash Associates shed 4.5% at Rs 163. Reliance Infrastructure dropped over 4% to Rs 985, and DLF was down 3.2% at Rs 491.

BHEL declined 4% to Rs 1,655. Larsen & Toubro slipped over 3% to Rs 2,626.

Tata Motors shed 3% at Rs 427. Cipla declined 2.7% to Rs 226.

Tata Steel dropped 2% to Rs 618, and Hindalco slipped 1.4% to Rs 149.

Ambuja Cements and Infosys were down 1% each at Rs 82 and Rs 1,550, respectively.

...and the movers

Ranbaxy surged over 3% to Rs 481. ACC rallied 2.4% to Rs 574.

Hindustan Unilever advanced nearly 2% to Rs 232. Satyam moved up 1.4% to Rs 375, and NTPC added 1% to Rs 188.

Value & volume toppers

Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 444 crore followed by Reliance Capital (Rs 374.50 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (Rs 321 crore), Reliance Petroleum (Rs 196 crore) and Reliance Infrastructure (Rs 166.50 crore).

Reliance Natural Resources led the volume chart with trades of around 3.35 crore shares followed by Ispat Industries (1.77 crore), MRPL (1.41 crore), Nagarjuna Fertilisers (1.40 crore) and Chambal Fertilisers (1.23 crore).
