The index touched a high of 16,262, and finally settled with a gain of 928 points (6.1 per cent) at 16,217. In the process, the index on Tuesday registered its second biggest single-day gain in absolute terms.
The BSE Realty index zoomed 9.5 per cent (645 points) to 7,451. The Bankex rallied 8% (627 points) to 8,371, and the IT index zoomed 7.7 per cent (264 points) to 3,686.
The market breadth was fairly positive -- out of 2,762 stocks traded, 2,075 advanced, 640 declined and 47 were unchanged on Tuesday.
The NSE Nifty ended with a gain of 268 points at 4,877.

Jaiprakash Associates zoomed over 16 per cent to Rs 233. DLF and Reliance Energy soared around 13 per cent each to Rs 679 and Rs 1,300, respectively.
Infosys surged 9.7 per cent to Rs 1,493. ICICI Bank rallied 9.3 per cent to Rs 880, and Wipro added 9 per cent to Rs 435.
HDFC gained 8.6 per cent at Rs 2,590. BHEL and ONGC moved up around 7.5 per cent each to Rs 2,013 and Rs 1,075, respectively.
Tata Steel advanced 7 per cent to Rs 634. TCS gained 6.4 per cent at Rs 876.
Hindalco and HDFC Bank rallied 6 per cent each to Rs 163 and Rs 1,418, respectively.
Reliance Communications and SBI gained 5.8 per cent each at Rs 538 and Rs 1,740, respectively.
Reliance and Satyam were up over 5 per cent each at Rs 2,314 and Rs 411, respectively.
VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS
Axis Bank topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 603 crore followed by GSS America (Rs 379.50 crore or Rs 3.79 billion), Reliance Capital (Rs 303.80 crore or Rs 3.03 billion), HDFC (Rs 246.40 crore or Rs 2.46 billion) and Essar Oil (232.30 crore or Rs 2.32 billion).
Reliance Natural Resources led the volume chart with trades of around 2.15 crore shares followed by Ispat Industries (1.62 crore), Essar Oil (1.15 crore), Reliance Petroleum (96.30 lakh) and IFCI (92.32 lakh).
