Sensex ends down 10 points at 20,207

Mirroring the weak trend in the global markets following the assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, the Sensex opened with a negative gap of 59 points at 20,158.

Fresh buying at lower levels saw the index move into positive zone and touch a high of 20,259. The index, thereafter, exhibited lacklustre movement for the major part of the day before slipping to a low of 20,023 - down 236 points from the day's high.

Late buying saw the index move up, once again, into positive zone and finally ended with a marginal loss of 10 points at 20,207. The Nifty closed at 6,080, down 2 points.

The BSE Midcap Index rallied over 1.5% (146 points) to 9575, and the Smallcap Index surged over 2% (273 points) to 11,069.

The Realty Index soared nearly 4% to 12,551, and the Metal Index gained 2.5% at 19,948.

The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,953 stocks traded, 2,266 advanced, 656 declined and 31 were unchanged today.

DFL zoomed over 5% to Rs 1,064.

Tata Steel and Ambuja Cements surged 2.8% each to Rs 931 and Rs 149, respectively.

Grasim, Hindalco and ITC advanced over 1% each to Rs 3,630, Rs 213 and Rs 206, respectively.

Ranbaxy, Reliance Energy and BHEL were also up 1% each at Rs 416, Rs 2,155 and Rs 2,582, respectively.

...And The Shakers

Wipro plunged 3.5% to Rs 530.

Bharti Airtel dropped 2.7% to Rs 941, and Bajaj Auto dropped over 2% to Rs 2,611.

TCS slipped 1.8% to Rs 1,080.

Value & Volume Toppers

Reliance Natural Resources topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 261.50 crore followed by Reliance Energy (Rs 218 crore), debutant Transformers & Rectifiers (India) (Rs 194 crore), SpiceJet (Rs 179.50 crore) and Essar Oil (Rs 171.20 crore).

SpiceJet led the volume chart with trades of around 2.19 crore shares followed by IKF Technologies (1.84 crore), Himachal Futuristic (1.70 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (1.49 crore) and G V Films (1.43 crore).
