The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 197 points at 19,895, and touched a high of 19,971 in early trades. The index, thereafter, pared gains and exhibited range-bound movement for most part of the trading day.
Fresh selling towards the end saw the index slip to a low of 19,584 - down 311 points from the day's high. The Sensex finally ended with a loss of 65 points at 19,633. The NSE Nifty ended flat at 5908.
The Mid-cap and Small-cap indices surged nearly 3% each to 8731 and 10,673, respectively.
The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,855 stocks traded, 2,182 advanced, 645 declined and 28 were unchanged on Monday.
INDEX MOVERS...
ACC zoomed over 4% to Rs 1,084. Cipla and Bajaj Auto gained over 3% each at Rs 187 and Rs 2,426, respectively.
Tata Steel and Mahindra & Mahindra moved up over 2% each to Rs 863 and Rs 749, respectively. Hindustan Unilever also rallied nearly 2% to Rs 205.
DLF, which made its debut in the Sensex today, finished with a gain of over 1% at Rs 948.
Grasim and Ranbaxy were also up 1% each at Rs 3,870 and Rs 416, respectively.
...AND THE SHAKERS
ITC plunged over 3% to Rs 199. ICICI Bank shed 2.7% at Rs 1,187, and HDFC Bank dropped nearly 2% to Rs 1,655.
Satyam slipped 1.4% to Rs 423. SBI and Reliance were the other notable losers at Rs 2,305 and Rs 2,852, respectively.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS
Essar Oil topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 311.70 crore followed by Reliance Petroleum (Rs 307.20 crore), Tata Teleservices (Rs 293.30 crore), IDFC (Rs 222.75 crore) and IFCI (Rs 222.20 crore).
Tata Teleservices led the volume chart with trades of around 6.08 crore shares followed by IFCI (2.30 crore), Essar Oil (1.48 crore), Reliance Petroleum (1.44 crore) and IDFC (1.11 crore).
