Selective byuing, thereafter, saw the index rebound into positive zone and touch a high of 19,838 - up 365 points from the day's low.
The Sensex could not hold the gain, and ended with a loss of 87 points at 19,698. The Nifty closed at 5,907, down 5 points.
The index, however, ended the week with a gain of 791 points.
While the Small-cap index advanced 1.5% to 10,381, the Mid-cap index moved up 1.2% to 8512 today.
The BSE FMCG index soared over 4% to 2231, and the Consumer Durables index surged over 2% to 5202.
The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,865 stocks traded, 1,912 advanced, 909 declined and 44 were unchanged today.
Index Movers...
ITC zoomed 8% to Rs 205. Grasim soared 6% to Rs 3,831.
Dr.Reddy's surged over 3% to Rs 620. Maruti rallied nearly 2% to Rs 733.
Maruti gained over 1% to Rs 1,049. Bharti Airtel was also up over 1% at Rs 912.
...And The Shakers
Hindalco plunged 5.5% to Rs 204.
Larsen & Toubro and Ranbaxy tumbled nearly 3% each to Rs 4,376 and Rs 412, respectively.
ICICI Bank and Reliance Communications slipped over 2% each to Rs 1,219 and Rs 708, respectively.
Tata Steel and NTPC were also down 2% each at Rs 843 and Rs 264, respectively.
Infosys dropped 1.8% to Rs 1,624. Reliance Energy declined 1.5% to Rs 1,826, and BHEL was down 1.3% at Rs 2,787.

Value & Volume Toppers
Essar Oil topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 635.50 crore followed by Reliance Petroleum (Rs 345.50 crore), MRPL (Rs 236.30 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (Rs 213 crore) and Nagarjuna Fertilisers (Rs 193.50 crore).
Essar Oil led the volume chart with trades of around 3.37 crore shares followed by Nagarjuna Fertilisers (2.43 crore), Facor Steels (1.81 crore), Essar Steel (1.74 crore) and MRPL (1.73 crore).
