Sensex ends down 36 points, Tata Motors zooms 4%

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 54 points at 15,100, and touched a high of 15,115 in morning trades.

The index drifted lower as the day progressed, and slipped to a low of 14,966 - down 149 points from the day's high. Banking, cement and telecom stocks witnessed profit-taking today.

The Sensex finally ended with a marginal loss (36 points) at 15,010. Tomorrow could be a crucial day for the markets with all eyes on the Infosys numbers and guidance.

The market breadth was negative - out of 2,710 stocks traded, 1,467 declined, 1,170 advanced and 73 were unchanged today.

Index movers...

Tata Motors rallied 4% to Rs 745 on reports that the company may list its profit-making arms. Maruti surged 2.4% to Rs 813. Mahindra & Mahindra and Bajaj Auto moved up over 1% each to Rs 788 and Rs 2,128, respectively.

Infosys advanced 1.3% to Rs 2,020. Satyam added 1% to Rs 497.

Hindustan Unilever gained 1.6% to Rs 199. Tata Steel was up 1.3% at Rs 634.

...and the shakers

Reliance Communications and HDFC Bank plunged 1.7% each to Rs 543 and Rs 1,148, respectively.

ITC shed 1.5% at Rs 153. Grasim and Ambuja Cements dropped nearly 1.5% each to Rs 2,727 and Rs 130, respectively.

SBI and Bharti Airtel slipped 1.3% each to Rs 1,551 and Rs 872, respectively.

Larsen & Toubro, NTPC and ACC were down 1% each at Rs 2,389, Rs 156 and Rs 1,037, respectively.

Most active counters

ICRA topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 186.50 crore followed by Orbit Corporation (Rs 173 crore), DLF (Rs 137.35 crore), Divi's Labs (Rs 112.50 crore) and Vishal Retail (Rs 107.50 crore).

Reliance Natural Resources led the volume chart with trades of around 1.84 crore shares followed by Debutant Ankit Metals (1.72 crore), G V Films (73.50 lakh), IFCI (73.40 lakh) and Arvind Mills (69.50 lakh).
