Sensex zooms 470 points to close at 13,049

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 70 points at 12,650. After advancing to higher levels the index slipped a bit to touch a low of 12,597.

However, fresh buying in select index heavyweights saw the index bounce back to higher levels. The buying gained momentum in late noon trades and the index soared to a high of 13,100 - up 520 points from the previous close.
The Sensex finally settled with a smart gain of 470 points (3.7%) at 13,049. The Mid-cap and Small-cap indices surged 2.5% each to 5247 and 6246, respectively.

The Bankex and Metal index soared 4.5% each to 6466 and 8133, respectively. The FMCG index rallied over 3% to 1717.

The market breadth was positive - out of 2,581 stocks traded, 1,748 advanced, 776 declined and the rest were unchanged today.

Index movers & shakers

All index stocks ended in positive zone.

HLL zoomed 9.5% to Rs 184. Gujarat Ambuja and BHEL soared around 8% each to Rs 113 and Rs 2,175, respectively.

Dr.Reddy's rallied 6.7% to Rs 677. Ranbaxy, Grasim and HDFC Bank advanced over 6% each to Rs 329, Rs 2,235 and Rs 972, respectively.

Reliance Communications surged 5.5% to Rs 434. Bharti Airtel gained nearly 5% at Rs 758. Larsen & Tourbo and ICICI Bank added 4.5% each to Rs 1,521 and Rs 863, respectively.

Hindalco and Tata Motors were up over 4% each at Rs 132 and Rs 770, respectively.

SBI, Wipro, Satyam, Reliance and Tata Steel ended with gains of around 3.5% each at Rs 1,000, Rs 577, Rs 446, Rs 1,335 and Rs 427, respectively.

Value & volume toppers

Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 199.70 crore followed by Indus Fila (Rs 160 crore), MindTree (Rs 142.85 crore), IPCL (Rs 91.65 crore) and SBI (Rs 83.65 crore).

IFCI led the volume chart with trades of around two crore shares followed by Indus Fila (1.23 crore), Broadcast Initiatives (69.70 lakh), Tata Teleservices (55.40 lakh) and Evnix (55 lakh).
