Sensex closes at 12,237, down 37 points

The markets ended weak on the back of negative cues from markets across the globe. However, the markets have outperformed Asian peers and some of the emerging markets. Asia closed quite soft and European markets have also opened weak. The Sensex closed at 12,236.78 down 37.49 points and the Nifty closed at 3544 down 9 points.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 6,016.10 down 20.07 points.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,007.41 down 34.46 points.

The BSE Oil and Gas Index gained 0.6% to close at 5,784.79. GAIL and Reliance were among the top gainers.

The BSE IT Index was down 0.9% at 4,394.03. Satyam, HCL Info, Mphasis BFL, Patni Computer and TCS closed lower.

The BSE Bankex was down 1% at 5,679.10. Kotak Mahindra, Federal Bank, Centurion BoP, ICICI Bank and PNB moved downwards.

The BSE Health Care Index was down 0.6% at 3,617.71. Sterling Bio, Orchid Chemical, Wyeth, FDC, Novartis India closed lower.

The BSE Metal Index was down 0.06% to close at 8,213.32. Jindal Saw, JindalStainless, Sesa Goa, Tata Steel and Guj NRE Coke ended lower.

The BSE FMCG Index slipped 1% at 2,061.73. Britannia, Dabur India, ITC, Nestle and Shaw Wallace closed in red.

The BSE Capital Goods Index was down 0.4% at 8,156.60. KEC Infrastruct, Gammon India, Greaves Cotton, Aban Offshore and BEML closed lower.

The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,214.65 down 0.2%. Amtek Auto, Hind Motors, Sundaram-Clayto,Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland and MRF were among the losers.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 6424.3 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 26831.57 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3124.72 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 36380.59 crore.

Midcap Gainers: Educomp up 31%, Pantaloon up 14%, Bom Dyeing up 9.1%

Midcap Gainers: UCO Bank up 8.7%, Bk of Mah up 6.6%, Indiabulls Up 4.2%

Midcap Losers: Sterling Bio Down 11.7%, Hinduja TMT Down 9.2%

Midcap Losers: Hotel Leela Down~8.5%, Bajaj Hind Down 6.3%

BSE Small Cap Index up 0.5%; Dewan Housing Up 26%, Nandan Exim Up 24%

Small Cap Losers: LML Down 20%,~ITI Down 11%
