Sensex closes below 12K, down 101 points

The markets closed in the negative terrain on account of heavy selling during last half hour. Asian markets closed on a weak note and European markets opened weak.

The Sensex closed below the 12000 level at 11,970.47 down 100.83 points and the Nifty slipped below 3,450 mark during the day and closed at 3,457 down 35 points.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 5,971.59 down 61 points.  The BSE Midcap Index ended at 4,997.21 down 62 points.

The BSE IT Index was up 0.3% at 4,352.81. Moser Baer, Satyam and TCS were among the top gainers.

The BSE Bankex was down 0.6% at 5,623.16. IOB, Vijaya Bank, Centurion BoP, Oriental Bank and Karnataka Bank moved downwards.

The BSE Health Care Index was down 0.9% at 3,601.85. Cipla, Wockhardt, GlaxoSmithKline, Lupin and RanbaxyLabs closed lower.

The BSE Oil and Gas Index lost 1.3% to close at 5,715.98. Chennai Petro, Reliance Natural, Kochi Refineries, IOC and MRPL closed lower.

The BSE Metal Index was down 1.4% to close at 8,033.87. JindalStainless, Jindal Steel, Sterlite Ind, Guj NRE Coke and Jindal Saw ended lower.

The BSE FMCG Index slipped 1.5% at 2,022.09. McDowell, Dabur India, Colgate, ITC and Britannia closed in red.

The BSE Capital Goods Index was down 1.6% at 8,050.83. Lakshmi Machine, Carborundum, Greaves Cotton and Alstom Projects closed lower.

The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,109.03 down 1.8%. Escorts, Cummins, TVS Motor, Apollo Tyres and Tata Motors were among the losers.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 7507.3 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 26299.91 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3691.66 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 37498.87 crore.

Sensex @ 1310 hrs

The markets are still trading in green. At 13.10 pm, the Sensex is up 44.86 points or 0.37% at 12,116.16, and the Nifty up 14.25 points or 0.41% at 3,507.

About 1240 shares have advanced, 1097 shares declined, and 94 shares are unchanged.

The BSE metal index has outperformed the other sectoral indices; it was up 1.15% at 8239.15. Stocks like Welspun Guj, JindalStainless, Hind Zinc, Sterlite Ind and Jindal Steel gained.

The BSE midcap and smallcap indices was up 0.46% at 5082.24 and 0.66% at 6072.22 respectively.

Satyam, Reliance Comm, Dr Reddys Labs, TCS and Hindalco were top gainers on the indices.

However, HDFC, Tata Motors, Hero Honda, Cipla, Jet Airways, Zee Tele and PNB were top loser on the indices.

Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,131.50 down 0.05% from its previous close of Rs 1,132.05.

Refinery major HPCL was trading at Rs 292.00 down 0.85% from its previous close of Rs 294.50.

BSE 500 gainers:

United Breweries Holdings was quoting at Rs 307.50, up Rs 51.25, or 20.00%.

United Breweries was quoting at Rs 143.00, up Rs 22.05, or 18.23%.

Ugar Sugar Works was quoting at Rs 21.75, up Rs 1.95, or 9.85%

Hindustan Motors was quoting at Rs 42.75, up Rs 2.90, or 7.28%.

Biocon was quoting at Rs 403.00, up Rs 24.70, or 6.53%.

Sensex @ 1158 hrs

The markets are rangebound and are currently trading with marginal gains.

At 11.58 am IST, the Sensex is up 32.93 points or 0.27% at 12,104.23, and the Nifty up 6.15 points or 0.18% at 3498.9.

About 1193 shares have advanced, 1023 shares declined, and 89 shares are unchanged.

Top gainers on the Sensex are Satyam up 2.28%, Dr Reddys Labs up 1.90% and Hindalco up 1.78%.

Top losers on the Sensex HDFC down 1.13%, HDFC Bank down 0.5% and SBI down 0.31%.

Top gainers on the Nifty are Reliance Comm up 1.72% and MTNL up 1.68%.

Top losers on the Nifty are Jet Airways down 1.44% and PNB down 1.05%.

Most active shares on BSE are Mahindra Gesco at Rs 824.00 with volume of 15,15,551 shares, Reliance Comm at Rs 332.20 with volume of  16,79,719 shares and Bombay Dyeing at Rs 709.45 with volume of  7,10,793 shares.

Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 251.70 up 0.46% from its previous close of Rs 250.55.

Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,133.30 up 0.11% from its previous close of Rs 1,132.05.

Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,824.35 up 0.38% from its previous close of Rs 1,817.45.

Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 187.85 up 0.4% from its previous close of Rs 187.10.

Refinery major HPCL was trading at Rs 292.55 down 0.66% from its previous close of Rs 294.50.

Sensex @ 1049 hrs

The markets have slipped and are witnessing volatility. At 10:49 am, the Sensex was trading at 12110 up 39 points and the Nifty was trading at 3498 up 6 points.

  • Top gainers on the Sensex are Hindalco up 2.14%, Tata Steel up 1.62% and Satyam up 1.30%
  • Top losers on the Sensex are HDFC down 0.85%, Cipla down 0.71% and Infosys down 0.63%
  • Top losers on the Nifty are PNB down 1.21% and GlaxoSmithKline down 1.18%.

Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 251.35 up 0.32% from its previous close of Rs 250.55.

Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,132.75 up 0.06% from its previous close of Rs 1,132.05.

Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,806.50 down 0.6% from its previous close of Rs 1,817.45.

Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 187.75 up 0.35% from its previous close of Rs 187.10.

Refinery major HPCL was trading at Rs 291.90 down 0.88% from its previous close of Rs 294.50.

Markets @ 9:57 am

The markets opened in the green on the back of buying seen in index pivotals. At 9:57 am, the Sensex was trading at 12108 up 36 points and the Nifty was up 4 points at 3497.

Ranbaxy, Infosys, SBI, ONGC, HLL, Hindalco, ITC, GSK, ICICI Bank, Nalco were the major gainers.

The Asian markets are trading mixed. Japan's Nikkei was up 0.67%, Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted gained 0.26%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 0.22%. However, South Korea's Seoul Composite fell 0.09% or 1.17 points at 1,373.13. Singapore's Straits Times was down 0.45%.

Dow ended down 6 points ahead of Federal Reserve meeting.

Crude oil futures rose. A barrel of light crude settled at $63.80, up 47 cents on the New York Mercantile Exchange after earlier rising more than $1.

Market cues:
