Sensex gains 110 points at close

The markets showed smart recovery in the late trade and moved in positive direction. The Sensex was up 110.10 points or 0.55% at 11,660.79, and the Nifty up 24 points at 3390.

  • The BSE Small Cap Index ended up 0.5% at 5,870.49.
  • The BSE Midcap Index gained 0.8% at 4,918.66.
  • Most of the BSE sectoral indices closed in the positive terrain. Capital goods index ended in red.
  • The BSE Bankex gained 1.9% at 5,336.46. Bank of Baroda, Union Bank, Karnataka Bank, Bank of India and Canara Bank moved upwards.
  • The BSE IT Index gained 1.9% to close at 4,223.81. Mphasis BFL, HCL Tech, TCS, Hexaware Tech and Infosys closed higher.
  • The BSE Auto Index gained 0.89% at 5,083.93. Asahi India, Apollo Tyres, Hero Honda, TVS Motor and Exide Industries were among the gainers.
  • The BSE Metal Index gained 0.5%at 8,230.15. Mah Seamless, Hind Zinc, Sterlite Ind, JindalStainless and SAIL witnessed buying interest.
  • The BSE Health Care gained 0.4% at 3,521.67. Ipca Labs, Divis Labs, Cipla, Orchid Chemical and Wockhardt gained.
  • The BSE Oil and Gas Index spurted 0.4% at 5,589.84. Chennai Petro, Reliance Natural, Reliance and IOC rose higher.
  • The BSE FMCG rose 0.2 % at 1,966.60. Shaw Wallace, McDowell, Nestle, Dabur India and Colgate closed in green.
    The BSE Capital Goods Index lost 0.1% at 7,803.93.Ingersoll Rand, KEC Infrastruct, HEG, BHEL, SKF India closed weak.
  • The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 7249.33 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 28789.64 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3390.09 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 39429.06 crore.

Sensex @ 1300

The markets were witnessing rangebound trade. At 1:54 pm, the Sensex was up 6 points at 11557. The Nifty was down 8 points at 3357.

The market breadth was negative, about 759 shares have advanced, 1567 shares declined, and 68 shares are unchanged.

Top gainers were Hero Honda (1.71%), HDFC Bank (1.53%), TCS (1.42%), Infosys (1.30%), Zee (3.66%), PNB (3.22%) and Oriental Bank (3.03%).

Hindalco (-4.24%), ONGC (-3.14%), BHEL (-2.38%), HLL (-1.72%) and HPCL (-3.24%) were the biggest losers on the bourses.

The BSE Metal Index lost 1.60%. The BSE FMCG Index was down 1%. The BSE Healthcare and Capital Goods indices were also down over 0.50%.

However, the BSE Bankex gained 1.41%. The BSE IT Index also surged 1.08%.

Markets @ 12:33 pm

The markets are choppy due lack of buying interest in scrips. At 12.33 pm, the Sensex is up 16.84 points or 0.15% at 11567.53, and the Nifty up 3.20 points or 0.10% at 3369.35.

About 683 shares have advanced, 1565 shares declined, and 59 shares are unchanged.

Among the BSE sectoral indices only the BSE bank and technology indices were trading in green; it was up 1.70% and 1.02%, respectively.

Hindalco, BHEL, ONGC, ITC, Tata Power and Nalco were top draggers on the indices.

However, top movers on the indices are HDFC Bank, TCS, Hero Honda, ICICI Bank, Zee Tele, PNB, Oriental Bank and HDFC Bank.

Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 226.70 down 1.46% from its previous close of Rs 230.05.

Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,099.80 up 1.12% from its previous close of Rs 1,087.65.

Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,754.00 up 1.02% from its previous close of Rs 1,736.35.

Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 179.20 down 1.46% from its previous close of Rs 181.85.

Refinery major HPCL was trading at Rs 298.85 down 2.14% from its previous close of Rs 305.40.

Top losers on the indices:

Hindalco was quoting at Rs 166.80, down Rs 7.6, or 4.36%.

BHEL was quoting at Rs 2,206.80, down Rs 47.8, or 2.12%.

Tata Power was quoting at Rs 492.85, down Rs 12.4, or 2.45%.

Nalco was quoting at Rs 196.40, down Rs 4.5, or 2.24%.

Market @ 11:28 am

The markets are witnessing volatility and have slipped again in the negative terrain. At 11.28 am, the Sensex is down 74 points at 11476, and the Nifty down 31 points or at 3334.

About 714 shares have advanced, 1315 shares declined, and 54 shares are unchanged.

Top losers on the Sensex are Hindalco down 2.98%, Wipro down 1.21% and ONGC down 1.12%. Top losers on the Nifty are Hindalco down 3.99%, Tata Power down 3.48% and BHEL down 2.75%.

Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 228.00 down 0.89% from its previous close of Rs 230.05.  Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,090.55 up 0.27% from its previous close of Rs 1,087.65.

Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,753.00 up 0.96% from its previous close of Rs 1,736.35. Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 179.80 down 1.13% from its previous close of Rs 181.85. Refinery major HPCL was trading at Rs 304.95 down 0.15% from its previous close of Rs 305.40.

Markets trading in positive terrain: Zee, Satyam up

The markets have moved in the positive terrain on account of buying seen in select index pivotals. At 10.53 am IST, the Sensex is up 59.56 points or 0.52% at 11610.25, and the Nifty up 2.40 points or 0.07% at 3368.55.

About 837 shares have advanced, 990 shares declined, and 65 shares are unchanged.

Top gainers on the Sensex are Satyam up 1.37%, Infosys up 1.36% and Reliance Comm up 1.26%. Top losers on the Sensex are Hindalco down 2.21%, Tata Steel down 0.74% and ONGC down 0.5%.

Top gainers on the Nifty are Zee up 4.98%, IPCL up 1.83% and HPCL up 1.67%. Top losers on the Nifty are Hindalco down 2.38%, Tata Power down 1.93% and NALCO down 1.2%.

Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 229.80 down 0.11% from its previous close of Rs 230.05. Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,102.00 up 1.32% from its previous close of Rs 1,087.65.

Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,760.50 up 1.39% from its previous close of Rs 1,736.35.

Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 182.40 up 0.3% from its previous close of Rs 181.85.

Refinery major HPCL was trading at Rs 311.10 up 1.87% from its previous close of Rs 305.40.

Markets open weak tracking Asian peers

The markets opened weak tracking its Asian peers. At 9:58 am, the Sensex was trading at 11502 down 47 points and the Nifty was trading at 3350 down 15 points.

The major losers on the indices were Hindalco, Siemens, VSNL, Bharti, Tata Steel and ONGC.

Reliance Comm, Wipro, HDFC Bank, Rel Energy, ITC, Reliance and Zee were among the gainers.

Asian stocks were flat to lower on Tuesday, Japan's Nikkei gained 0.31% or 49.26 points, South Korea's Seoul Composite, Hong Kong's Hang Seng were flat, Singapore's Straits Times was up 0.10% or 2.44 points. However, Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted fell 0.36% or 23.89 points at 6,669.99.

Wall Street stocks close marginally higher as oil prices fall; Dow was up 5 points.
