Sensex sheds 54 points at close

The markets were sluggish and were trading below the flat line throughout the day ahead of the Fed meet on Wednesday. The Asian indices were trading weak and the European markets also opened in red. The Sensex closed at 10,812.64 down 53.87 points. The Nifty lost 26 points to close at 3151.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed flat at 5,216.29.
The BSE Midcap Index ended flat at 4,358.87.
Most of the BSE sectoral indices closed in red with Oil and Gas, FMCG and Bank being among the top laggards.
The BSE Bankex was up 2% at 4,867.76. ICICI Bank, BHEL, NTPC and Cipla were among the losers.
The BSE Consumer Durables Index gained 0.9% at 2,751.50. Whirlpool, Blue Star and Samtel Color gained ground
The BSE FMCG Index was flat at 1,857.45. Tata Tea, P&G, Britannia and Nestle closed in green.
The BSE Metal Index was down 0.9% at 7,774.29. Welspun Guj, JindalStainless, SAIL and Tata Steel witnessed moderate buying.

The Auto index closed at 4,522.04 down 0.9%. Hero Honda, Hind Motors, Maruti Udyog and TVS Motor closed lower.
The BSE IT Index was down 1.08% at 3,975.33. Wipro, Satyam, Mphasis BFL and TCS moved up.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was down 0.2% at 7,135.06. Greaves Cotton, HEG, Lakshmi Machine and L&T closed lower.
The BSE Health care index closed flat at 3,274.63. Divis Labs, Lupin, Wyeth and Apollo Hospital closed in the negative terrain.

The BSE Oil and Gas Index closed down 1.2% at 4,942.20. Petronet LNG, HPCL, Reliance, IOC and GAIL were among the losers.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 4132.66 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 13930.1 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 2035.09 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 20097.85 crore with lowest total market turnover in 2006.

CNX Midcap Index ends almost flat at 3915.05

Oswal Chemicals up 20%, RCF up 5% on new urea policy introduced

BSE Small Cap Index ends down marginally

Godawari Power up 6.19%; gets 66,536 carbon credits

NSE Advance Decline ratio at 3:4

Lowest total market turnover in 2006 at Rs 20,097.85 Cr

Lowest F&O turnover in 2006 at Rs 13,930.1 Cr
