The markets closed near its day's high, the rally picked up momentum during the final hours of trade.
The BSE Sensex closed above the 10,000 level with gain of over 218 points and the Nifty closed with a gain of 62 points.
The Sensex finally closed at 10,040.14 up 217.62 points. The NSE Nifty closed at 2,923 up 62 points.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 5,323.89, up 210.23 points. The BSE Midcap Index ended at 4,323.64, up 111.95 points.
About 2015 shares have advanced, 349 shares declined, and 46 shares are unchanged.
The global cues were not very positive, the Asian markets ended flat and the European markets opened in the red.
The major gainers on the indices were Dr Reddy's Labs, Bharti Airtel, Wipro, Reliance, HCL Tech and Jet Airways.
The BSE Oil and Gas Index was rose 2.98% at 4,889.37. Chennai Petro, Reliance, Petronet LNG, MRPL and ONGC advanced higher.
The BSE IT Index was up by 2.77% at 3,503.16. HCL Tech, Wipro, HCL Info, Satyam and Infosys moved up.
The BSE FMCG Index was up 2.68% at 1,840.89. McDowell, Shaw Wallace, ITC and P&G closed in green.
The BSE Metal index was up 2.5% at 7,794.05. Sesa Goa, JSW Steel, JindalStainless, SAIL and Guj NRE Coke witnessed buying at the bourses.
The BSE Capital Goods Index moved up by 2.34% at 6,636.55. BEML, Thermax, Alstom Projects, Carborundum, Ingersoll Randm, Aban LoydChiles and Praj Industries closed higher.
The BSE Health Care Index was up by 2.34% at 3,145.32. Dr Reddys Labs, Glenmark, Biocon, Wockhardt, FDC and Sun Pharma were among the major gainers.
The BSE Consumer Durables Index gained 2.27% at 2,763.00. Whirlpool, Su-Raj Diamonds, BPL, Titan Industries and Samtel Color inched up.
The BSE Bankex advanced 0.92% at 4,305.68. IOB, Bank of India, Andhra Bank, PNB and Kotak Mahindra moved up.
The BSE Auto Index added 0.78% at 4,531.40. Apollo Tyres, Escorts, Tube Investment, Sundram, MRF and Hind Motors closed in positive terrain.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 6030.16 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 23252.40 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 2817.31 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 32099.87 crore versus Rs 32,526.64 yesterday.

Sensex @ 1500 hrs
The markets have further gained ground and moved up on the back of buying seen in scrips across sectors. At 3:00 pm, the Sensex has breached the 10000 level and was trading at 10033 up 210 points and the Nifty was trading at 2821 up 60 points.
About 1989 shares have advanced, 329 shares declined, and 48 shares are unchanged.
All the BSE sectoral indices are trading in green and heavy buying can be seen in metal, pharma and capital goods.
The major gainers on the indices were Dr Reddys Labs, Reliance, Bharti Airtel, Reliance Energy, HCL Tech and ITC.
Sensex @ 1312 hrs
The markets continue to trade steady with selective buying seen in scrips across sectors.
At 1:12 pm, the Sensex was trading at 9,993 up 171 points and the Nifty was trading at 2,907 up 46 points.
More importantly, the BSE Midcap has advanced by 2.56% or 108 points at 4,319.62 and the BSE Smallcap was up 199 points or 3.9% at 5,313.13.
About 1956 shares have advanced, 301 shares declined, and 47 shares are unchanged.
All the BSE sectoral indices are trading in green and heavy buying can be seen in metal, pharma and capital goods.
The major gainers on the indices are Dr Reddys Labs, Hindalco, Reliance Energy, L&T and HCL Tech.
Sensex @ 1222 hrs
The markets have regained strength after a witnessing a fall in yesterdays trade.
At 12:22 pm, the BSE Sensex was trading at 9,987 up 164 points and the Nifty was trading at 2903 up 42 points.
About 1888 shares have advanced, 285 shares declined, and 44 shares are unchanged.
Dr Reddys Labs, Hindalco, Reliance Energy, Tata Steel and HCL Tech were top gainers on the indices.
HLL, BHEL, ONGC, Bharti Airtel, BPCL and HPCL were top losers on the indices.
Dr Reddys Labs was quoting at Rs 1,329.70, up Rs 69.70, or 5.53%. Hindalco was quoting at Rs 165.95, up Rs 6.95, or 4.37%. HCL Tech was quoting at Rs 462, up Rs 21.90, or 4.98%.

The markets have gradually moved up on the back of renewed buying interest in select index pivotals.
At 11:40 am, the BSE Sensex was trading at 9,933 up 111 points and the Nifty was trading at 2886 up 24 points.
About 1797 shares have advanced, 288 shares declined, and 38 shares are unchanged. All the BSE sectoral indices are trading in green and heavy buying can be seen in metal, pharma and capital goods.
The major gainers on the indices are Dr Reddys Labs, Hindalco, Reliance Energy, L&T and HCL Tech.
Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 214.00 down 1.27%, Reliance was trading at Rs 940.05 up 1.74%, Infosys was trading at Rs 2,869.00 up 0.89% and ITC was trading at Rs 164.10 up 1.52%.
Sensex @ 1038 hrs
After the initial sluggishness the markets have bounced back and moved in the positive terrain.
At 10:38, the Sensex was trading at 9884 up 62 points and the Nifty was up 10 points at 2871.
About 1251 shares have advanced, 201 shares declined, and 16 shares are unchanged.
The major gainers on the indices were NTPC, Dr Reddys Labs, Reliance Energy, ACC, Jet Airways, IPCL and ABB.
Among the laggards were HLL, Bharti Airtel, ONGC, Hero Honda, HPCL and BPCL.
Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 213.00 down 1.73%, Reliance was trading at Rs 926.90 up 0.32%, Infosys was trading at Rs 2,827.00 down 0.59%and ITC was trading at Rs 162.50 up 0.53%.
Sensex @ 10:10
The markets were sluggish with mixed global cues. At 9:58 the Sensex was trading at 9770 down 52 points and the Nifty was trading at 2841 down 20 points.
However, by 10.07, the Sensex was up 19 points at 9842.
The NSE Nifty was up 1 point at 2862.
The global cues are mixed; the Nikkei was down about 1%, Straits Times down 0.3%, Taiwan down a bit less than 0.7%, Kospi down 0.7% and the Hang Seng is flat.
The Dow closed with modest gains of 0.3% and in the emerging markets; Russia was up about 1%, Brazil was down about 1%, Chile was up 0.5% and Mexico up about 1%.
The major losers were ONGC, Infosys, Bharti Airtel and HLL.
