Continuing with its buoyant trend, the Sensex on Friday resumed firm with a gain of 14 points at 6,799.
The index remained above the 6,800 mark through the trading session as most of the counters exhibited healthy gains.
While the sentiment continued to remain bullish, the markets witnessed a steep rally in mid-noon trades as widespread buying across-the board propelled the index to an intra-day high of 6,864.
The Sensex towards the closing hours came off its highs on profit-taking in select stocks, and finally wrapped up the session with a surge of 65 points at 6,849. The Nifty also logged hefty gains to close at 2,148 - up 19 points.
While 25 Sensex stocks advanced, five declined on Friday. Advancing shares clocked a volume of 1.40 crore amounting to Rs 759.51 crore, and declining shares accounted for a volume of 43 lakh for Rs 198.25 crore.
The breadth of the market was positive with 1,065 gainers and 869 losers, while 57 stocks ended unchanged on the BSE.
Reliance, with a traded volume of over 32.34 lakh, advanced 2.41% (Rs 13) to Rs 572. While ITC scaled up 1.89% (Rs 25) to Rs 1,371, ONGC closed up a tad at Rs 890. HLL, however, was down a rupee at Rs 150.
Wipro soared 3.33% (Rs 23) to Rs 721. While Infosys clocked a per cent gain (Rs 15) to Rs 2,233, Satyam ended with a steady gain of Rs 2 at Rs 402.
Zee flared up 7.25% (Rs 10) to Rs 146.
HDFC Bank moved up 1.57% (Rs 9) to Rs 586. While ICICI Bank ended marginally higher at Rs 397, SBI slipped a per cent (Rs 4) to Rs 713.
Grasim and ACC were up a per cent each at Rs 1,375 (up Rs 14) and Rs 373 (up Rs 2), respectively. Gujarat Ambuja was up a tad at Rs 446.
Bajaj added 1.48% (Rs 16) to Rs 1,100. While Tata Motors, with a traded volume of over 12.84 lakh, rose 1.78% (Rs 9) to Rs 488, Maruti jumped 1.91% (Rs 9) to Rs 483. Hero Honda, however, lost a per cent (Rs 3) to Rs 560.
Hindalco (up Rs 28 or 2% to Rs 1,403), BHEL (up Rs 11 or 1.26% to Rs 863), HDFC (up Rs 14 or 1.85% to Rs 787), L&T (up Rs 17 or 1.54% to Rs 483) and Reliance Energy (up Rs 8 or 1.51% to Rs 565) ended with steep gains.
HPCL, however, dipped 1.43% (Rs 5) to Rs 338, while Tisco was down Rs 2 at Rs 429.
Tech pivotals logged smart gains. Aftek Info vaulted 20% (Rs 14) to Rs 86, and Zensar Tech jumped 12.25% (Rs 23) to Rs 211. SSI, Igate Global, Tata Elxsi, Rolta, VisualSoft, Hughes Software, HCL Tech, Ramco System, NIIT, Geometric Software and Tata Infotech ended higher in a range of 2-8%.
Auto stocks, too, rallied sharply today. Maharashtra Scooters spurted 14.84% (Rs 25) to Rs 192, while Ceat mopped up 13% gains (Rs 12) to Rs 104. Hindustan Motors moved up 11.23% (Rs 4) to Rs 37, and TVS Motors soared 8% (Rs 6) to Rs 79. JK Industries, Mother Sumi Systems and MRF ended firm in a range of 6-8%.
Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 183 crore, followed by SBI (Rs 113 crore), Satyam (Rs 100 crore) and ONGC (Rs 77 crore), respectively.
