Sensex closes 19 points down

The Sensex opened flat on Saturday on an additional trading day. Despite weakness in the US markets, the index rallied to an intra-day high of 5,795.  But lack of buying at higher levels saw the Sensex pare all its gains and slip into negative zone.

The index, thereafter, remained lacklusture for major part of the trading day. Fresh selling in the last half hour of the trading pushed the Sensex to an intra-day low of 5,748 - down 47 points from the intra-day high.

The Sensex finally closed 19 points lower at 5,758. The Nifty moved in a range of 1,825 - 1,813, before settling with a marginal loss of two points at 1,818.

While 20 Sensex stocks declined, nine advanced and one finished unchanged today. Declining shares registered a volume of 0.30 crore for Rs 134.50 crore, and advancing shares accounted for a volume of 0.09 crore amounting to Rs 41.62 crore.  Infosys declined Rs 8 to Rs 1,700.

Wipro and Satyam shed Rs 2 each to Rs 637 and Rs 393, respectively.

HLL, ITC and Reliance were down a rupee each at Rs 128, Rs 1,115 and Rs 553, respectively.  HPCL gained 1.5% (Rs 5) at Rs 327. ONGC was down a rupee at Rs 800.

ICICI Bank declined over a per cent (Rs 4) to Rs 292. HDFC Bank erased Rs 2 to Rs 406, and SBI lost a rupee at Rs 488.

HDFC dropped 1.5% (Rs 10) to Rs 671.  Ranbaxy shed Rs 7 to Rs 1,081. While Dr.Reddy's gained Rs 4 at Rs 772, Cipla closed unchanged at Rs 290.  Bajaj Auto tumbled Rs 18 from the intra-day high of Rs 1,032, to finally close at Rs 1,016 - down Rs 3 from previous close.

The scrip witnessed buying in the earlier part of the trading day owing to the news that the company plans to enter Pakistan for expansion.

While Hero Honda was down a rupee at Rs 435. Maruti and Tata Motors finished unchanged at Rs 366 and Rs 424, respectively.  Zee lost a per cent at Rs 159, and Bharti Tele finished 2% (Rs 3) lower at Rs 154.

Mirc Electronics zoomed 10.5% (Rs 2.25) to Rs 23.60. Ingersoll Rand rallied 8.3% (Rs 20) to Rs 256, and Jindal Steel surged 6.3% (Rs 45) to Rs 771.

GTL, Orchid Chemicals, Ispat Industries, HMT, Rolta, Welspun Gujarat, J B Chemicals, Shipping Corporation, Hindustan Zinc, MphasiS BFL, Allahabad Bank, Gujarat Narmada, LIC Housing Finance, Videocon International, Siemens, VSNL and National Aluminium advanced 2-5% each.

Titan, Nestle, Jaiprakash Associates, Vijaya Bank, HCL Technologies, Escorts, Ashok Leyland, Geometric Software, Aurobindo Pharma, Colgate, Chennai Petro, Jindal Stainless, Jindal Iron & Steel, Apollo Hospitals, Cadila Healthcare and Lupin declined 1-2% each.

SAIL topped the volume chart with a combined (BSE+NSE) volume of around 1.93 crore shares. It was followed by Ispat Industries (44.01 lakh), Shipping Corporation (28.29 lakh), Ashok Leyland (22.17 lakh) and Welspun Gujarat (21.51 lakh).

SAIL tops the turnover chart with a combined turnover of Rs 96.72 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 60.85 crore), Tisco (Rs 59.82 crore), Orchid Chemicals (Rs 52.30 crore) and TCS (Rs 43.76 crore).

Sensex @ 1445 hrs

The Sensex slipped to an new intra-day low of 5,766, and is now down seven points at 5,770. The Nifty is unchanged at 1,820.

Infosys is down Rs 4 at Rs 1,703. Satyam and Wipro are down a rupee each at Rs 394 and Rs 637, respectively.

ITC is up Rs 2 at Rs 1,118. HLL and Reliance are unchanged at Rs 128 and Rs 555, respectively.

HPCL has spurted 1.5% (Rs 5) at Rs 327, and ONGC is unchanged at Rs 801.  HDFC has declined 1.6% (Rs 11) to Rs 670.  Zee and Bharti Tele continue to languish at lower levels.

Sensex @ 1345 hrs

The Sensex is moving in an extremely narrow range of 5-6 points. The index is now down five points at 5,772. The ifty is flat at 1,820.

The Sensex stocks are very lacklusture as there seem to be no movement at all in them. However, there is solid action outside the index stocks. Here is a list of gainers and losers.

Mirc Electronics has zoomed 10% (Rs 2) to Rs 23.50. Ingersoll Rand has rallied 9% (Rs 22) to Rs 258. Jindal Steel, HMT, Orchid Chemicals, JB Chemicals, GTL and Rolta have gained 4-7% each.

Welspun Gujarat, Birla Corporation, National Aluminium, Videocon International, Hexaware, Ispat Industries, D-Link India, MTNL, Hinduja TMT, Shipping Corporation and LIC Housing Finance have posted smart gains.

Container Corporation, Thermax, Nestle, Vijaya Bank, Ashok Leyland, Indo Gulf, Escorts, Jaiprakash Associates, TVS Motors, Century Textiles, Titan, Apollo Hospital, Jindal Stainless and Exide are down 1-2% each.

Sensex @ 1300 hrs

The Sensex is down six points at 5,771. The Nifty down one point at 1,819.

Infosys has shed Rs 7 at Rs 1,701, and Wipro is down Rs 3 to Rs 635. Satyam is down a rupee at Rs 394.  ITC is marginally up at Rs 1,119. HLL and Reliance are unchanged at Rs 129 and Rs 554, respectively.

While HPCL has spurted a per cent (Rs 4) to Rs 326, ONGC is up a rupee at Rs 802.

HDFC has declined a per cent (Rs 7) to Rs 674.  Dr.Reddy's and Cipla are marginally up at Rs 772 and Rs 292, respectively. Ranbaxy, however, is down Rs 3 at Rs 1,085.

Reliance Energy and Tata Power have rallied a per cent each to Rs 669 and Rs 331, respectively.  Zee and Bharti Tele continue to languish at lower levels of Rs 159 and Rs 154, respectively.  SAIL is topping the volume chart on the BSE, and the counter has clocked a volume of around 28.58 lakh shares so far.

Welspun Gujarat (5.38 lakh), Orchid Chemicals (5.29 lakh), Ashok Leyland (4.88 lakh) and GTL (4.80 lakh) have also logged good volume.  SAIL, also, tops the value chart with a turnover of Rs 14.54 crore so far on the BSE.

It is followed by Reliance (Rs 14.44 crore), Tisco (Rs 13.58 crore), Orchid Chemicals (Rs 13.18 crore) and SBI (Rs 10.20 crore).

Sensex @ 1225 hrs

The Sensex has slipped into negative zone to a low of 5,769, and is now at the same lower levels - down eight points. The Nifty has shed three points at 1,817. 

Infosys has slipped Rs 6 to Rs 1,702, and Wipro is down Rs 2 at Rs 636. Satyam is down a rupee at Rs 394.  Reliance is up a rupee at Rs 556. HLL and ITC are steady at Rs 1,122 and Rs 129, respectively. 

Hindalco has pared gains and is now up Rs 3 to Rs 1,367. Tisco continues to trade flat at Rs 302.  HDFC has declined a per cent (Rs 6) to Rs 675.  Larsen & Toubro has surged 1.4% (Rs 12) to Rs 852, and Bhel is up Rs 2 at Rs 625.  Bajaj Auto is up Rs 8 at Rs 1,027.

Hero Honda, Maruti and Tata Motors are all flat at Rs 437, Rs 366 and Rs 425, respectively.  Dr.Reddys' has gained Rs 7 at Rs 775.

Cipla and Ranbaxy are up a rupee each at Rs 291 and Rs 1,089, respectively.  Reliance Energy has rallied a per cent (Rs 6) at Rs 668, and Tata Power is unchanged at Rs 328.  Zee and Bharti Tele are ruling weak at Rs 160 and Rs 154, respectively. 

The BSE TECk index and BANKEX have extended losses at 1,479 and 2,807, respectively. However, the BSE Auto, PSU, and FMCG indices are holding marginal gains at 2,412, 3,727 and 922, respectively. 

Orchid Chemicals, HMT, Jindal Steel, Videocon International, Birla Corporation, Rolta, Welspun Gujarat, Hexaware, Sterlite Optical, Ingersoll Rand, Abbott India, D-Link India, LIC Housing Finance, Hinduja TMT and Shipping Corporation have rallied 2-5% each.  Geometric Software, ICI India, Container Corporation, Godrej Consumers, UTI Bank, Colgate, HCL Technologies, Finolex Cables, Nestle, Siemens, Escorts, Britania and ING Vysya Bank are down 1-2% each.

Sensex @ 1145 hrs

The Sensex is marginally (two points) up at 5,779, and the Nifty is up a point at 1,821.

Bajaj Auto has rallied a per cent (Rs 10) following the news that the company plans to enter Pakistan for business expansion. While Hero Honda has slipped a rupee to Rs 435, Maruti and Tata Motors are flat at Rs 366 and Rs 425, respectively.

Infosys and Wipro are down Rs 3 each to Rs 1,705 and Rs 635, respectively. Satyam is down a rupee at Rs 394.  Reliance and ITC are firm at Rs 556 and Rs 1,122, respectively. HLL is steady at Rs 129.

ONGC has moved up Rs 4 to Rs 805. HPCL is unchanged at Rs 323.  While HDFC Bank is up Rs 2 at Rs 410, ICICI Bank is down Rs 2 at Rs 294. SBI is unchanged at Rs 490.  Hindalco has surged Rs 10 to Rs 1,374. Tisco, however, is trading flat at Rs 302.

Dr.Reddys' has gained a per cent (Rs 8) at Rs 776. Cipla and Ranbaxy has moved up Rs 2 each to Rs 292 and Rs 1,090, respectively.

Reliance Energy has added Rs 6 at Rs 668.  Zee is down a rupee at Rs 160, and Bharti Tele has tumbled Rs 3 to Rs 154.

While the BSE Auto, PSU, FMCG and Health Care indices have posted marginal gains at 2,414, 3,741, 924 and 2,593, respectively, the BSE BANKEX and TECk index are marginally down at 2,811 and 1,481, respectively.

Sensex @ 1110 hrs

The Sensex opened unchanged at 5,777, it slipped a bit to touch an intra-day low of 5,772. Fresh buying at lower levels led the index rally to a high of 5,795. The index is now at the same higher levels having gained 19 points.

The Nifty is at 1,823 - up three points.

Wipro is down Rs 2 at Rs 636. Infosys and Satyam are unchanged at Rs 1,708 and Rs 394, respectively.

Reliance is up Rs 2 at Rs 556, and ITC has gained Rs 6 at Rs 1,122. HLL is trading flat at Rs 129.
