The upward bias continued for the third consecutive session today. After a small gain of four points at the opening bell at 5,587, the index soon hit a low of 5,574 (down 112 pts from its intra-day high) on selective selling pressure.
The markets, however, soon reversed its trend into positive zone, and remained firm thereafter. While the bullish sentiment continued in the afternoon trades, the index towards the fag-end soared to an intra-day high of 5,686 (up 99 pts from the opening bell) on broad-based buying support.
The Sensex finally wrapped up the last day of the trading session with a gain of 92 points at 5,676. The Nifty advanced 30 points to close at 1,775.
While 28 Sensex stocks advanced, two declined today. Advancing shares recorded a volume of 2.38 crore amounting to Rs 1,010.20 crore, and declining shares accounted for a volume of seven lakh for Rs 29.89 crore.
Reliance exhibited strong gains, and soared 2.91% (Rs 15) to Rs 533. Over 34.86 lakh shares changed hands on the BSE.
While HLL closed up a per cent at Rs 127, ITC, however, failed to attract buying support and lost a per cent (Rs 10) to Rs 1,128.
ONGC notched up 3.91% gains (Rs 29) to Rs 778. More than 11 lakh shares were traded on BSE with a value of Rs 88 crore.
ACC advanced 3% (Rs 8) to Rs 275. While L&T spurted 2.52% (Rs 22) to Rs 876, Gujarat Ambuja added 2% (Rs 7) to Rs 345. Grasim logged 1.21% gains (Rs 14) to Rs 1,162.
SBI moved up 2.30% (Rs 11) to Rs 479. While HDFC Bank clocked 1.90% gains (Rs 8) to Rs 410, ICICI Bank added 1.19% (Rs 3) to Rs 289.
Reliance Energy, BHEL and Tata power were up nearly 2% each to Rs 643 (up Rs 11), Rs 584 (up Rs 10) and Rs 319 (up Rs 5), respectively.
Infosys ended with a modest gain of Rs 7 at Rs 1,702. While Satyam gained nearly 3% (Rs 11) to Rs 388, Wipro logged 1.36% gains (Rs 8) to Rs 605.
While HDFC jumped 3% (Rs 18) to Rs 628, Hindalco mopped up 2.58% (Rs 35) to Rs 1,383.
Tata Motors, which clocked a volume of over 20.32 lakh on BSE, rose 3.78% (Rs 15) to Rs 419. Bajaj, Hero Honda and Maruti ended with a per cent gain each.
Bharti, however, was amongst the few losers in the Sensex basket, and dropped 2.64% (Rs 4) to Rs 142.
BSE Oil&Gas index led the indices table with a gain of 2.70% (77 pts) at 2,923. While BSE Metal index gained 2.09% (105 pts) to 5,125, BSE PSU index jumped 1.93% (69 pts) to close at 3,633. BSE Auto index was up 1.80% (42 pts) at 2,397, and BSE CG added 1.78% (43 pts) to 2,485.
Tisco topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 217 crore, followed by Reliance (Rs 183 crore), ONGC (Rs 88 crore) and Tata Motors (Rs 83 crore).
Metal stocks exhibited gains today. Jindal Steel surged 6.34% (Rs 39) to Rs 662. While Jisco added 4.84% (Rs 13) to Rs 277, Sterlite Industries moved up 4% (Rs 24) to Rs 612. Jindal Stainless jumped 3.73% (Rs 3) to Rs 85. Tisco, on volumes of over 76.9 lakh on BSE, closed up a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 292. Sail, with a volume of over 94.97 lakh on BSE, was up 1.29% at Rs 47.
PSU major Balmer Lawrie zoomed 12.94% (Rs 14) to Rs 126. Other PSUs Bongaigaon Refinery, Neyveli Lignite, ITI, BPCL and National Fertlizers gained in a range of 5-2%.
Sensex @ 1515 hrs
The Sensex has zoomed to a high of 5,675, and is now up 90 points at 5,674. The Nifty has rallied 30 points to 1,776.
Reliance has surged over 2% (Rs 11) to Rs 529. ITC has erased most of its gains and is now up a rupee at Rs 1,139. HLL is steady at Rs 126. ONGC has gained nearly 4% (Rs 29) at Rs 777. HPCL is up 1.5% (Rs 5) at Rs 321.
Technology stocks have extended gains on the back of fresh buying. Satyam has moved up 2.7% (Rs 10) to Rs 388. Infosys and Wipro have rallied 1.7% each to Rs 1,707 and Rs 606, respectively.
Hindalco has surged over 3% (Rs 44) to Rs 1,392. Tisco has erased all its losses and is now trading a tad lower at Rs 288. ACC has rallied 2.7% (Rs 7) to Rs 274. Larsen & Toubro, Gujarat Ambuja and Grasim have also posted smart gains at Rs 869, Rs 343 and Rs 1,164, respectively.
Bhel has advanced nearly 2% (Rs 11) to Rs 585. HDFC has gained 2.5% (Rs 16) at Rs 625. Dr.Reddy's is firm with a gain of 3% (Rs 22) at Rs 759. While Ranbaxy is Rs 7 at Rs 1,098, Cipla is unchanged at Rs 296.
Tata Motors has zoomed 2.6% (Rs 10) to Rs 414. Hero Honda is up 1.4% (Rs 6) at Rs 454. Bajaj Auto and Maruti are also trading in the positive zone with gains at Rs 1,032 and Rs 357, respectively.
Tata Power is steady at Rs 317, and Reliance Energy has moved up 1.5% (Rs 10) to Rs 642. Tisco has topped the volume chart on the BSE, and the counter has clocked a volume of around 58.06 lakh shares followed by SAIL (55.52 lakh), Ispat Industries (50.21 lakh), Reliance (25.11 lakh) and Tata Motors (15.64 lakh).
Tisco tops the value chart, with a turnover of Rs 166.75 crore on the BSE. It is followed by Reliance (Rs 132.89 crore), ONGC (Rs 70.18 crore), Tata Motors (Rs 64.10 crore) and Infosys (Rs 62.52 crore).
Sensex @ 1430 hrs
The Sensex has zoomed to a high of 5,660, and has now gained 1.4% or 75 points at 5,659. The Nifty has rallied to 1,771 - up 25 points.
Reliance has rallied nearly 2% (Rs 10) to Rs 528. ITC is up Rs 9 at Rs 1,147, and HLL is up a rupee at Rs 126.
ONGC has soared nearly 4% (Rs 29) to Rs 778. HPCL has rebounded into positive zone and is up Rs 2 at Rs 319.
Satyam is spurted over 2% (Rs 8) to Rs 385. Wipro has moved up 1.6% (Rs 10) to Rs 606, and Infosys is steady at Rs 1,706.
Hindalco has surged 3% (Rs 40) to Rs 1,388. Tisco, however, is still down Rs 5 at Rs 285. ACC and Larsen & Toubro have rallied 2% each to Rs 272 and Rs 870, respectively.
Gujarat Ambuja has advanced 1.5% (Rs 5) to Rs 343, and Grasim is up a per cent (Rs 13) at Rs 1,160. Bhel is up 1.4% (Rs 8) at Rs 582. HDFC has rallied 2% (Rs 13) to Rs 623.
Dr.Reddy's has advanced 3% (Rs 21) to Rs 758, and Ranbaxy is up a per cent (Rs 9) to Rs 1,100. Cipla is trading flat at Rs 296.
Tata Motors has zoomed 2% (Rs 8) to Rs 385. Hero Honda has raced 1.7% (Rs 8) to Rs 455. While Maruti is up a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 357, Bajaj Auto is unchanged at Rs 1,025.
Tata Power and Reliance Energy have gained a per cent each at Rs 316 and Rs 640, respectively.
CESC, Cummins, Maharashtra Seamless, Saw Pipes, Crompton Greaves, Hinduja TMT, Jindal Iron & Steel, United Phosphorous, J B Chemicals, Essel Propack, Cadila Healthcare, TVS Motors, HCL Technologies, Bongaigaon Refinery, LIC Housing Finance, Jindal Steel and Neyveli Lignite have rallied 3-5% each.
Godrej Consumer is down 3.5% (Rs 8) to Rs 213. IDBI Bank, Wockhardt Life, Syngenta, Indian Overseas Bank, Asian Paints, Abbott India, HMT, Federal Bank, Proctor & Gamble, HCL Infosys, Siemens, Finolex Industries, Merck, Corporation Bank, GlaxoSmithKline Consumer, Finolex Cables and ING Vysya Bank have declined 1-2% each.
Sensex @ 1340 hrs
The Sensex has surged to an new intra-day high of 5,632, and is now up 47 points at 5,631. The Nifty has advanced 13 points to 1,759.
Satyam is up nearly 2% (Rs 7) to Rs 385. Infosys and Wipro are steady at Rs 1,702 and Rs 605, respectively.
Reliance has rallied 1.5% (Rs 8) to Rs 526. ITC is up nearly a per cent (Rs 10) at Rs 1,148, and HLL is unchanged at Rs 125.
ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank are firm at Rs 290 and Rs 410, respectively. SBI has advanced Rs 3 to Rs 472.
ONGC is holding gains of nearly 2% (Rs 14) at Rs 763. HPCL is down Rs 2 at Rs 314.
While Tisco is down 1.7% (Rs 5) at Rs 284, Hindalco has moved up 2.4% (Rs 32) to Rs 1,380.
Cement stocks have extended gains. Larsen & Toubro has surged 1.8% (Rs 15) to Rs 870. ACC has spurted over a per cent (Rs 4) to Rs 271, and Gujarat Ambuja is up a per cent at Rs 341. Grasim is up Rs 7 at Rs 1,155.
Bharti Tele is down over 2% (Rs 3) at Rs 143. Zee has rebounded into positive zone and is up a rupee at Rs 153.

Satyam has spurted nearly 2% (Rs 7) to Rs 384. Infosys has moved up Rs 13 to Rs 1,708, and Wipro is up Rs 6 at Rs 603.
Reliance has surged 1.3% (Rs 7) to Rs 525. ITC is steady at Rs 1,146, and HLL is marginally down at Rs 125.
HDFC Bank has rallied over 2% (Rs 9) to Rs 412. ICICI Bank is up 1.6% (Rs 5) at Rs 291. SBI has bounced into positive zone and is up a rupee at Rs 469.

Larsen & Toubro has moved up 2% (Rs 17) to Rs 872. ACC and Gujarat Ambuja are up Rs 2 each at Rs 269 and Rs 339, respectively. Grasim is up a rupee at Rs 1,149.
Reliance Energy and Tata Power have added a per cent each to Rs 639 and Rs 317, respectively.
SAIL has topped the volume chart on the BSE, and the counter has clocked a volume of around 33.53 lakh shares so far. Tisco (33.35 lakh), Ispat Industries (31.91 lakh), Reliance (13.53 lakh) and IDBI (9.63 lakh) have also logged good volume.
Tisco tops the value chart, with a turnover of Rs 94.69 crore so far on the BSE. It is followed by Reliance (Rs 70.29 crore), Infosys (Rs 36.43 crore), ONGC (Rs 23.97 crore) and Maruti (Rs 23.73 crore).
Sensex @1140 hrs:
The Sensex touched an intra-day high of 5,617. However, selective profit-taking at higher levels pushed the index into negative zone. The index slipped to a low of 5,574, but soon recovered and is now up seven points at 5,591. The Nifty is at 1,744 - down two points.
Infosys has moved up Rs 13 to Rs 1,708. Wipro is up Rs 4 at Rs 600, and Satyam is up Rs 2 at Rs 379.
ITC has gained Rs 4 at Rs 1,142. Reliance has shed Rs 4 to Rs 514, and HLL is down a rupee at Rs 124.
ICICI Bank has advanced nearly 2% (Rs 5) to Rs 292. HDFC has erased some gains and is now up Rs 4 at Rs 407. SBI, however, is down Rs 3 at Rs 465.
While ONGC has gained Rs 7 at Rs 756, HPCL is down Rs 2 at Rs 314.
Cipla is down 1.5% (Rs 5) at Rs 292, and Ranbaxy has declined Rs 10 to Rs 1,081. However, Dr.Reddy's is up Rs 3 at Rs 740.

The Sensex opened a tad higher at 5,587. Fresh buying saw the index rally to a high of 5,603 - up 20 points. The index is now at the same higher levels. The Nifty is at 1,750 - up four points.
Infosys is up Rs 10 at Rs 1,705. Wipro has gained Rs 5 at Rs 602. Satyam, however, is unchanged at Rs 378.
ITC is up Rs 4 at Rs 1,142. HLL is tad lower at Rs 125. Reliance is down Rs 3 at Rs 515.
HDFC Bank has rallied nearly 2% (Rs 7) to Rs 410, and ICICI Bank is up 1.7% (Rs 5) at Rs 291.
Hero Honda has zoomed 2% (Rs 9) to Rs 457.
Zee is down a per cent at Rs 150.
