Sensex ends up 26 points; Realty stocks lead rally

The Sensex on Monday opened with a positive gap of 101 points at 13,988. The index was volatile throughout the trading day. Around noon it surged to a high of 14,028, up 141 points. However, the index could not hold gains and slipped into the red to touch a low of 13,819, down 209 points from day's high.

The Sensex finally ended up 26 points, at 13,913, with realty stocks leading the rally. The Realty index gained 4% at 3,451.

The market breadth was extremely positive -out of 2,816 stocks traded approx 87% (2,470) advanced while only 11% (316) declined. The rest were unchanged.

The NSE Nifty ended at 4,238, down 1 point.

INDEX MOVERS..

Ranbaxy zoomed 21% to Rs 266. Jaiprakash Associates surged 7% to Rs 186. Sterlite rallied 6% to Rs 538.

DLF gained 5% at Rs 352. ITC, Tata Power, Sun Pharma, Reliance Communications, Tata Steel, Maruti Suzuki and Relianec Infrastructure advanced 1-3% each.

...AND SHAKERS

Bharti Airtel slumped 5.5% to Rs 811. NTPC, HDFC and Grasim dropped 1.5% each to Rs 213, Rs 2,087 and Rs 2,110, respectively. ACC was down 1% at Rs 721.

OTHER PROMINENT GAINERS...

JP Hydro Power soared 20% to Rs 267. Glenmark Pharma zoomed 14% to Rs 64. Ispat Industries, Videocon Industries and NMDC rallied 12% each.

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals, Fortis Healthcare, Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers, Tata Teleservices Maharashtra, Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone, Welspun Gujarat Stahl-Rohren and Petronet LNG were the other major gainers.

AND LOSERS..

Suzlon and Jindal Steel slumped 5% each to Rs 89 and Rs 2,078, respectively. HDIL slipped 4% to Rs 294.

Cairn India, Tulip Telecom, National Aluminium Company, BEML, Punjab National Bank, IDFC, GMR Infrastructure and Indian Bank also declined.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS:

Suzlon topped the value chart with a total turnover of Rs 740.64 crore. It was followed by Reliance Natural Resources (Rs 271.48 crore), DLF (Rs 198.36 crore), Reliance (Rs 196.83 crore) and Bharti Airtel (Rs 192.99 crore).

Suzlon also led the volume chart with trades of over 84 million shares. It was followed by Reliance Natural Resources (33.69 million), Ispat Industries (27 million), Unitech (22.84 million) and IFCI (16.42 million).
