Satyam Computer Services Ltd has begun hiring engineers outside India.
The software company announced on Thursday the 'mass recruitment' of entry level engineers from top Malaysian universities. These recruits will undergo a 14-week training programme at the company's development centre in Cyberjaya, Malaysia.
Satyam Chairman B Ramalinga Raju said at a news conference at Cyberjaya that the graduates were chosen after a rigorous selection exercise in the last two months. The company said in a media release that the 'mass hiring was conducted under a Multimedia Super Corridor Internship Programme and follows an agreement that Satyam signed with the Multimedia Development Corporation of Malaysia.'
The number of engineers recruited was not revealed.
Raju, who is participating at the high-level MSC International Advisory Panel discussions in Cyberjaya, said the recruitment drive is the most significant outside India by the company, which launched its Global Solutions Centre at Cyberjaya in April, 2003.
The Entry Level Technology Programme in Malaysia is a refined version of the one conducted by the company in India, where over 3,500 fresh graduates have undergone it in the last year alone, the release said.
Due care has been taken to ensure that the design of the programme meets the local requirements both in terms of the academic standards of the Malaysian graduates, who have joined the programme, and their cultural sensitivities.
"This recruitment programme will not only help the Malaysian graduates to gain the requisite know-how but also provide trained manpower for strengthening the human resource base at Satyam's GSC in Malaysia," said Raju.
"It underscores the potential we see in Malaysia's young engineering talent and the software development market in the country. It also demonstrates our deep commitment to Malaysia which is an important centre for Satyam in the Asia-Pacific region," he added.
"Satyam looks forward to deepening its relationship with the Government of Malaysia and conducting many more such programmes."
The programme aims at transforming fresh graduates into productive software engineers, who can function effectively as team members. The 14-week programme is divided into two phases. Phase I deals with basic concepts in which all the fresh graduates, irrespective of the discipline, get to know the subjects like data structures and algorithms, operating systems concepts, relational database management system and software engineering, including designing and testing. Phase II deals with a specific technology which in the case of first batch is .Net. essential behavioral inputs like transition management, communication skills, business etiquettes, team building and leadership are interspersed with the technical inputs.
"Satyam is investing a great deal by way of resources to make the programme a grand success. The programme will see the best of the faculty coming from India. Experienced associates from Satyam's GSC in Cyberjaya are devoting considerable time and energy in mentoring by sharing project experiences with the participants," said Virender Aggarwal, Satyam's senior vice president and head of the Asia-Pacific region.
