N Sankar, leading industrialist and honorary counsul general of Denmark for Southern India at Chennai, has been honoured with the order of 'Dannebrog Knight first class' by the Queen of Denmark in recognition of his services as the consul general of Denmark.

Sankar, who has been heading the Danish consular interests in South India for the past 18 years, joins the elite list of people, who were life-holders of the most ancient decoration of Denmark, bestowed by the sovereign.

''He is the first Indian citizen to be conferred with Knighthood First Class. The decoration, which is normally restricted to Danish citizens, has been awarded to Sankar, in recognition of his meritorious service,'' S B Prabhakar Rao, vice consul, Royal Danish Consulate, Chennai, said in a press release.

The decoration consists of a silver cross with a red border surmounted by a royal crown over the reigning sovereign's monogram with a silver badge and ribbon with rosette, Rao said.
