Nilachal Ispat-SAIL merger underway: Minister

There is no proposal to merge Nilachal Steel Corporation with SAIL but the process for the government's proposed merger of Nilachal Ispat Nigam Limited with Steel Authority of India Ltd is underway, the Lok Sabha was informed on Monday.

In a written reply to a query, minister of state for steel Akhilesh Das said an Expert Group constituted by the Steel Ministry to evaluate the feasibility of the merger of Maharashtra Elektrosmelt Limited and Manganese Ore India Limited with SAIL, has recommended the merger of MEL with SAIL.

On the merger of MOIL with SAIL, the group has advised to retain MOIL for the present as an independent company.

The ministry has accepted the recommendations of the group and the process of merger of MEL with SAIL has been initiated, he said.

In reply to another query, Das said to ensure availability of manganese ore for the domestic ferro-alloys industry, the government has put restrictions on export of high grade manganese ore.

Further, there is an overall ceiling on export of manganese ore of 7 lakh tonnes.

Alloy Steel Plant of Durgapur has developed a special large-scale stainless steel conical assembly made of low magnetic permeability stainless steel.

The product was developed in synergy with the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, the Minister said in reply to a question.
