Maharashtra Chief Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Wednesday said that 83 roads in Mumbai will be taken up as priority work under a recently sanctioned Rs 2,648 crore (Rs 26.48 billion) Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project.

This project would be undertaken in conjunction with the Rs 4,526 crore (Rs 45.26 billion) Mumbai Urban Transport Project.

"These priority work includes seven elevated roads, 36 flyovers, four road over-bridges, 25 pedestrial grade separators and 10 vehicular subways that would be taken up by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority for implementation."

Addressing mediapersons after performing the 'bhoomipoojan' for the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli link road in the northern suburb of the city, which falls under the MUTP project, Shinde said that the 10.6 km long road would consist of three sections and would cost Rs 115 crore (Rs 1.15 billion).

The road is expected to be completed in 20

months. This project entails the rehabilitation of 1,000 encroaching families who would be given alternative accommodation.

"The priority work under the MUIP is estimated to cost Rs 1,550 crore (Rs 15.50 billion), while the works in the island city may cost Rs 430 crore (Rs 4.30 billion). For this project around 35,000 families will have to be rehabilitated," Shinde said.

This project will facilitate fast and efficient dispersal of traffic.

Provisions have also been made for pedestrian movement along and across the roads.

"There will also be a station area traffic improvement scheme under the MUIP. This scheme is meant for improving roads and traffic movement around railway stations. Special attention is also being given for exclusive bus-ways on selected roads, bus stops, terminals and car parks within the masterplan of the MUIP," he said.
