Bringing ticket booking facilities to the doorsteps of passengers, Indian Railways will from now allow selling of reserved tickets through post offices.
A memorandum of understanding was signed in this regard by the Railways and the Department of Posts on Tuesday in the presence of Railway Minister Lalu Prasad and Minister of Communications and Information Technology A Raja.
Beginning at 30 places across the country on a pilot basis, the postal department would issue railway tickets through the computerised passenger reservation system counters provided by the ministry of railways and the postal department.
"Both the departments have come together to help passengers. People in remote areas had problems reaching the stations and now can go to the nearby
post offices to book their tickets," Prasad said at the function.
"This additional measure would also help in reducing crowds at Railway stations and more and more people would flock to nearby post offices to buy tickets," he said.
The railways would impose a nominal service charge on each ticket which would depend on the category of tickets booked.
While first class passengers would have to pay Rs 25 per ticket other categories like AC III and II Class sleeper would pay Rs 20 and Rs 15 respectively.
Asked whether the additional service charge would not put a burden on the passengers, he said, "the passengers, specially in rural areas, were anyway going to far off places to book tickets, this way they can travel money as well as time".
