Through the product, video images can travel on a low bandwidth. Ahmedabad-based Renovau Telecom India, a subsidiary of UK's Renovau Telecom has developed a carrier grade multi-media telephone exchange capable of switching DVD quality video telephony, video multi-casting and public switched video surveillance capabilities.

The company is, currently, testing its products along with BSNL for commercially rolling them out in India. The company plans to launch its products for one million BSNL lines in Ahmedabad and Bangalore in two months. Renovau has developed a product suite where video images can travel over internet on a bandwidth of as low as 128 kbps. The switch, developed by the company, will offer call routing, call management and billing solutions.

All this is done using a single switch or a device developed indigenously by Renovau which is scalable up to five million lines.

Renovau also in talks with Vavasi Telecom and a couple of top GSM players. Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd is also evaluating Renovau products for Mumbai, a company official said.

The overall project cost for Renovau, including pan-India service and deploying switches in the US and UK, is about Rs 500 crore, and the company is planning to raise the amount by private equity placement.

Gujarat Venture Finance Ltd has already shown interest in the company, a senior company official said. Renovau is looking at sales of Rs 300 crore (Rs 3 billion) in 2008-09.

Industry sources said that while the cost with BSNL is being worked out, it would be in the range of Rs 300-500 per month for unlimited usage including video telephony and video multi-casting whereas the cost will be higher for surveillance.

A person in India can call up to US or UK using the video phone at as low as Re 1 per minute plus connect charges.

"We aim to cover all the 23 telecom circles in India. In my knowledge, no company except ours has achieved this feat of developing multi-play services switch with five million lines of capacity," said Rajesh Chharia, CMO of Renovau who is also the president of the Internet Service Providers' Association of India.

Besides, Renovau aims to tap the rural market with our low-cost services and can cater to tele-education, tele-medicine and entertainment through our product, Chharia said.

The device also has video multi-casting facility and there can be a conference call involving up to 10,000 users at a time, he added. Renovau network floats over the Internet. So, any one, having any broadband internet connection of any ISP can use Renovau's multi-play services.

A subsidiary of UK-based Renovau Ltd, Renovau Telecom, has been founded by technocrat K S Reddy who along with his family holds 51 per cent stake in it.
