Operations of several top companies, located in central and south Gujarat, continued to be affected on Friday with torrential rains lashing several parts of Gujarat for close to a week.

Operations of the manufacturing facilities of General Motors, Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Ltd, Indian Oil Corporation's refinery, Gujarat State Fertilisers and Chemicals Corporation, Apollo Tyres, Amul Dairy and the like remained hit.

Although spokespersons of General Motors India could not be reached for comment, personnel at the Halol plant of GM, located in Panchmahal district, said the plant has not been operational for the past two days.

Heavy water logging in the area has prevented workers from attending duties.

The death toll in the spell of rains has meanwhile reached 90 as the state government intensified its relief and rehabilitation efforts.

Union home minister Shivraj Patil reached Ahmedabad on Friday and held a round of meetings with officials even as chief minister Narendra Modi demanded more central aid to meet the emergency.

A GSFC spokesperson said water logging in Vadodara and its surrounding areas has prevented workers from attending duties at the fertiliser complex.

Power is being restored in a phased manner at state government run fertiliser major Gujarat State Fertiliser Corporation Limited, the spokesperson said.

The plant of Apollo Tyres Limited at Limda in Vadodara district has also been shut down. 'Due to heavy rains, production at the Apollo Tyres Limda plant near Vadodara has been affected. The power supply to the plant has been disrupted.

It is too early to assess the loss to property, if any. Once the water clears away and electricity is restored, we will be able to gauge the extent of the damage better, ' said Satish Agarwal, Unit head of the Limda plant of Apollo Tyres Limited.

However, all plants of pharma major Alembic Limited are functional and have not been affected by the torrential rains. R K Baheti, director, finance, for Alembic Limited said on Friday that both the plants at Vadodara, as well as the two plants at Panelav are functioning normally.

'Fortunately, operations of all our plants are on and the torrential rains have not had affected us in any way,' Baheti said.

The Amul Dairy plant at Anand, saw a drop in procurement of milk of more than 20 per cent in the past two days. Amul Dairy managing director Rahul Kumar said that a chiiling centre at Cambay has been severely affected by flooding waters and cannot be operated as of now.
