The proposed system, for the first time in the country, would be implemented in a short period without undue traffic diversions and involve minimal acquisition or disruption to existing utilities and services.
The state-of-the art system would be on a design, build, own, operate and transfer basis, for which global tenders have been invited. Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai) Ltd would be the implementing agency for the development of this project, an official statement said.
Being elevated, accidents with surface traffic would be ruled out and the cost-effective and safe system would cater to passenger demands on high-density as well as low-density corridors being capable of easy capacity upgradation.
The mono rail system being environment friendly would cause less noise pollution as it would be run on rubber tyres with electric power, the statement said.
