Cyber cafes will be opened at 50 railway stations during the current financial year by RailTel, a company under the Railway Ministry, which has made considerable progress in creating nationwide state-of-the-art telecom infrastructure.
The cafes will not only have Internet browsing but also IP telephony (Voice Over Internet Protocol), video conferencing and e-mail services, Minister of State for Railways Naranbhai J Rathwa said Thursday night.
This service will be extended in future, he said at the 5th Annual Day celebrations of Railtel Corporation in New Delhi.
Another Minister of State for Railways R Velu and chairman Railway board J P Batra were also present on the occasion.
In addition, Railtel plans to launch broadband services for corporate sector and residential customers, for which metro area network in 100 cities is planned. Besides, wireless system 'Wimax' is also planned in about 200 cities.
RailTel was formed in September 2000 with the objective to modernise Railways' train operation and safety system and spur growth of telecom services especially in rural, remote and backward areas.
During the last five years, RailTel has made impressive progress in building high-speed broadband multimedia network.
