Code Division Multiple Access technology major Qualcomm Inc on Friday announced the opening of a research and development in Hyderabad, to support its chipset development activities.
The centre is a part of the US-based company's efforts to enhance its worldwide engineering workforce to help meet the increasing demand for third generation (3G) wireless devices and to advance CDMA technology in the country, Qualcomm said on Friday.
The site in Hyderabad would include software, DSP firmware and hardware development, design, testing and technical customer support, which is a part of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies work, it said.
QCT President Sanjay K Jha said, "work at this facility will positively impact our expanding product roadmap as well as create opportunities for growth and innovation in this
Region."
Meanwhile, the company has also signed a definitive agreement to acquire California-based Spike Technologies Inc, a semi-conductor design services company, and its affiliated companies for $19 million in cash, it said.
Spike Technologies, founded in 1994 by Nikhil Modi and Pradeep Vajram, has a design centre in Bangalore, it added.
The addition of Spike's engineering resources complements Qualcomm's commitment to provide 3G CDMA customers and partners with design, sales and technical support around the world, it said.
The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and other conditions, it said.
