PricewaterhouseCoopers would set up a training centre for accounting services in Kolkata at its new campus near Wipro.
The centre would service offshore accounting jobs.
This venture would mark the foray of PwC in to accounting BPO jobs here. PwC (India) managing director Roopen Roy told reporters here after the formal launch of the centre that PWC wanted to achieve a synthesis of accounting and IT.
"PwC is both IT and accounting company while others are either are pure IT companies or accounting companies, but PwC is are strong in both the fields," he said. Roy said the state government's focus on ITes has provided PwC the opportunity to develop innovative approaches to offshoring services and project management activities.
Commenting on the initiative, the head of assurance services, PwC Midlands, John Minards said that PwC UK chose to work with PwC in India as Kolkata had a cosmopolitan population with highly qualified English speaking professionals, excellent infrastructure and low cost of operation. PwC Midlands would be a stakeholder in the project.
Terming the progress of West Bengal in IT as remarkable, Sanjoy Sen of PwC, Midlands pointed out that it complements Kolkata's natural advantage in terms of the availability of highly skilled English speaking people and accounting skills.
Sen would be relocating to Kolkata to lead this growing initiative between UK, Europe and India.
