After capturing a substantial portion of the prawn market in the US, an Indian company has launched a new brand of quality prawns in the UK, with an assurance that it would be 30 per cent cheaper than products available in the market.

The new product 'Tastee Choice' was launched in London on Thursday by C. Phunsog, minister (economic) in the Indian High Commission. It was marked by a demonstration of Indian cooking using prawns by well-known chef Mario Andrasini.

The company supplied prawns worth $60 million to the US market last year and plans to export prawns worth 3 to 5 million pounds to the UK in the next one year, chairman and managing director of the Cochin-based Choice Trading Corporation, Jose Thomas said.

The company has already tied up with chain store Londis, which has 2,200 branches in the UK. The company's products would be 30 per cent cheaper than those prevailing in the UK market as a result of elimination of middlemen, Jose said.

The world market for seafood has doubled within the last decade reaching $49.32 billion mark with India's share being around 2.5 per cent, he said.

"Shrimp continues to be India's single largest seafood export item in terms of value - contributing to 31.5 per cent in terms of quantity and 65.88 per cent in terms of the total marine products exported from India closely followed by frozen fish at 33.5 per cent share in quantity and 10.19 per cent in value terms," Jose added.
