May 25, 2006 15:56 IST

Reliance Communication Ventures, the CDMA-based mobile service provider, has tied up with the department of posts to offer tracking of mails sent through EMS Speed Post.

In one of the largest-ever business-to-consumer mobile enterprise initiatives in India, the Anil Dhirubai Ambani Group flagship company will provide the status of every letter send through the premium postal service.

A customer can log onto the telephony major's R World suite of applications, select India Post and submit the consignment number.

The status of the consignment including the date and time, details of the mail send, current position of the consignment or delivery status among others would be displayed on the handset. The company is levying Rs 3 per query of the consignment tracking.

RCoVL president (applications solutions and content group) Mahesh Prasad said, "Tracking of Speed Post mails on mobile phones offers customer convenience, considering the reach of mobile phones against the internet."

Speed Post is one of the premium services launched by DoP and is available in over 1,000 locations. It registers between 3 and 5 lakh bookings a day and the service ensures delivery of articles within 24 hours.

The tracking facility provided on Reliance World is akin to the online consignment tracking interface provided by large logistic companies, including the DoP.

Small and medium enterprises, not only in the metros but also in the smaller towns, heavily depend on Speed Post owing to its reach, which private courier companies cannot match, will benefit immensely from this service.

Initially, the Speed Post tracking service will be available on R World and will soon be deployed SMS interactivity from any Reliance mobile.
