The department of posts on Friday said it was planning to have a wide area network through the central server technology, to be used by the banking segment of the post office.

However, no timeframe has been prescribed to launch the network, which would facilitate anywhere banking in post offices, Dr U Srinivasa Raghavan, member, operations and marketing of postal services board, Delhi, said.

To coincide with the celebration of 150 years of India Post, the department was planning to launch corporate e-post from next month, he said.

The recently introduced e-post bridged the digital divide among computer haves' and have-nots. This combined the speed of e-mail and the home/office delivery by postmen for the benefit of common man.

There was also a proposal to launch greeting malls through e-post, he said. The logistic post service introduced in April last between Chennai and Hosur in Tamil Nadu, is now extended to Bangalore, he said, adding with more states coming under LPC the department was building a grid to cover the whole country.

There was a plan to extend LPC from Chennai to Kanyakumari via Madurai and also for connecting Coimbatore and Tirupur with Chennai, Salem, Bangalore and Cochin, Raghvan said.
