The government will amend the more than 100-year-old Indian Postal Act to bring courier services within its ambit, Minister of State for Communications and IT Shakeel Ahmad said in Lok Sabha.

In the absence of clear guidelines and regulation, the private courier companies have been delivering letters and money orders under the garb of documents and this has severely dented revenues of postal department, he said.

"We have decided to amend the Indian Postal Act, 1898 by year-end to bring courier services as part of it," Ahmad said.

On delayed delivery of letters in various parts of the country, the minister said steps have been taken in this direction, including installation of automatic mail processing centres in Mumbai and Chennai and segmentation of mail into various channels.
