June 15, 2005 15:12 IST
The department of posts will start a service to distribute campaign material for companies and revamp its VPP service, to tap the high volume business segment.

"Our 'Direct Mail' service, which will distribute campaign material of companies in any corner of India will start any time soon. We have got all approvals for that," R Ganesan, secretary, department of posts said in New Delhi.

Talking on the sidelines of World Bank seminar on 'Transformation of India Post for Vision 2020', he said that for every mail the cost to the company would start from just Rs 1.50 but they would have to promise a minimum volume. He said the value paid parcel was also being revamped to serve the needs of companies.

"By using the technology and existing services we will enter in to agreements with companies by which we will take their products to the customers and instead of paying them for every product we will make them consolidated payments," Ganesan said.

"We have talked to the Confederation of Indian Industry and they are excited about the idea," he added.

Earlier in his address at the seminar, which was read out by Ganesan, Communications and IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran expressed concern over delay in implementation of decisions it had taken to take on the competition from emerging players.

"The department should take quick decisions to implement those steps. The implementation is sometimes held bank by deliberations well rooted in rules but not intended to give it early bird advantage."
