Leszek Miller, Prime Minister of Poland, on Monday underscored that economic cooperation between his country and India would provide joint undertakings that should reflect the capacities of the two nations in the 21st century.
Addressing a meeting organised in his honour by the Confederation of Indian Industries and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry jointly, he pointed out that both Poland and India had significantly modernised compare to a few years ago.
India and Poland signed a memorandum of understanding for joint cooperation in developing each other's defence industry.
The MoU was signed between CII and the Polish Chamber of National Defence Manufacturers to explore vistas in the defence sector which would be mutually beneficial.
With Indian opening up national defence procurement to the private sector, it is envisaged that the MoU will reinforce each other's strength in it.
Underscoring that Poland was a 'democratic, stable and successful developing country,' Miller contended that it had achieved a growth of 1.3 per cent "but symptoms of acceleration are already in sight."
He invited Indian investments and participation in joint venture projects as the two countries agreed to bolster economic cooperation in diversified fields.
He pointed out that his country had noted significant improvement in the industry and service sectors with a low inflation record, which, by January this year, had plummeted to 0.5 per cent.
He pointed out that Poland was an investor-friendly country and Polish law favoured the inflow of foreign direct investment with their value over the past 13 years being $62 billion.
"We are creating increasingly convenient conditions for foreign investors," Miller said, adding that his country intended to appoint an 'ombudsman' to look after the interests of foreign investors.
The visiting Polish prime minister and his business delegation are in India to boost bilateral cooperation, chiefly in the defence and economic areas.
Contending that Polish-Indian cooperation in the defence industry was also being reinforced, he pointed out that Poland was ready to participate in the further development of the Indian economy and offer its products.
The Polish offer included turnkey supply of complete production lines, individual machines and items of equipment, apart from transfer of technology.
He pointed out that Poland offered Indian companies to cooperate in coal and lignite mining, power engineering, railway engineering, machine building, aerospace industry, crude oil and gas extraction, maritime economy as well as agricultural and food-processing industries.
"I wish to encourage Indian companies to visit Poland, to engage in direct contacts with Polish companies," said Miller pointed out.
Earlier, Minister of State for External Affairs Digvijay Singh said that Indo-Polish cooperation and India enjoyed close and traditionally friendly relations with Poland.
Singh outlined India's expertise in various fields, including information technology and defence and expressed the hope that the mutually beneficial relations between the two countries would pave the way greater economic and defence cooperation in the future.
